As you probably know, our office decided to offer a SUGAR DETOX to all of our patients to begin in January. So far, it has been a great success and I really hope it leads to improved health and a change in eating habits since SUGAR IS LINKED TO 45 different medical conditions such as heart disease, heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, dementia and many more.

So, here is my plan and I actually started on December 26th meaning that I just finished 2 weeks of SUGAR DETOX and here is the plan and what actually has happened. The basic plan is-NO SUGAR for the month of January. The best way to do that is to pretty much eliminate anything in a package, can or jar as all of these foods are processed and that means that there is a very high likelihood that this container has sugar in it. By law, anything in a package has to contain the ingredients. So, I went through my pantry and the refrigerator and through out everything that contained a sugar in it. The scary part is that most manufacturers have created 61 different names for sugar such as corn syrup, barley syrup, Dextrose, Fructose, etc. Remember that anything ending in an “OSE” is a sugar. YOU WILL BE SURPRISED WHAT TO THROW OUT! That also means that when you go to the store to replace what you just threw out you will need to shop the outer isles and NOT the inner isles. So think of nothing canned and everything fresh. Here is my experience

WEEK ONE-this was tough. I was shocked at the withdrawal symptoms. I felt tired, I had some headaches, I did not sleep well for most of the week. And the worst one was all of my cravings. The cravings were not so much about the sugar but rather my favorite carbs like bread or pasta of even things that I hadn’t had in years (Like Oreo Cookies that I probably haven’t had since I was in college??? But as the week went on, things got much better.

WEEK TWO-This week was much easier. There were no withdrawal symptoms, and all my cravings were gone. The best part was that every night I slept about 7.5-8 hours without having to get up at all and waking up feeling fresh. My energy levels went through the roof and my mental clarity was fabulous. I actually enjoyed walking and going to the gym and it seemed fun. One thing that I did not expect and was not looking for was that over the two week period I have lost a total of 5 pounds-Love that since I had gained 5 with Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s.

So, what did my DETOX diet look like?
BREAKFAST- most days I had some type of eggs with sugar free toast, omelets with vegetables like spinach or mushrooms along with coffee and no added sugar of any kind. I also had several protein drinks made in a blender with vegetables, fruits (mainly a few berries) and a protein powder that I got at Whole Foods with no SUGAR.

LUNCH-By the second week I was not near as hungry, but I had some dinner leftovers (like a chicken leg) or one of my favorites which WILD SMOKED SALMON in a package. I just open it up and eat some-no preparation at all. Also, I had some salads and nuts and seeds. Sounds simple and it was.

DINNER-my wife is a fabulous cook, and she has been pretty much on board with all of my schemes. So basically, every night we had a protein (Fish, beef, hamburger patties, chicken, pork and lamb) with some grilled vegetables such as spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, Brussel sprouts, squash etc. AND a great salad with all kinds of green stuff and tomatoes and vegetables. Keep in mind that all the proteins were NOT FARM RAISED and all the vegetables were ORGANIC. NOT FARM RAISED means it was grass fed grass finished, or pasture raised or free range etc. The reason for this is because pretty much all farm raised proteins are fed antibiotics, hormones and the animals are eating things that they would not normally eat (Such as corn-do you think that wild fish eats corn regularly?) When these animals eat corn and other unnatural products they produce Omega 6 fatty acids which are really bad for your heart. IN MY OPINION, DON’T BUY ANYTHING THAT IS FARM RAISED. ALSO IN MY OPINION, DON’T BUY OR EAT ANYTHING THAT IS PROCESSED-IT ALL HAS SUGAR AND TONS OF CHEMICALS TO MAKE IT LAST FOR 6 MONTHS ON THE GROCERS SHELF.

So far, this SUGAR DETOX HAS BEEN VERY REWARDING. I knew that sugar was 8 times more addictive than Cocaine but I didn’t think I ate very much sugar so I didn’t think I would have withdrawal symptoms and I didn’t think I would lose any weight. Oh Well, we all learn. I encourage you to give it a try. You will be shocked and surprised and be healthier for it. GOOD LUCK.

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, we need to eliminate SUGAR and processed foods from our diet. Sugar, along with lots of chemicals and additives are in almost anything in a container. Please switch to fresh foods and unprocessed foods and in my opinion, avoid the fast-food restaurants as they are loaded to the gills with all kinds of chemicals, sugars and salts. Remember, the American Heart Association recommends only 6 tsps. of SUGAR PER DAY! SO, FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY LET’S THROW OUT SUGAR AND GET HEALTHY FOR 2024. The doctors and staff are behind you and call us if we can help. 713-781-2800.
