I believe the mouth is the WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH. I also believe that as individuals we need to take care of our health-nobody else is going to do it for us.

Based on several studies from around the world and one that we have done in our own office (Informal study), scientists confirm what we have known for a long time. Many humans realize that as we age, we typically lose strength, mobility and get some form of disease. What most people DON’T REALIZE is that this is NOT INEVITABLE and CAN LARGELY BE PREVENTED! The way I see it is that from age 30 on we are in a catabolic phase of life, which means breakdown. To me, it is evident that we can slow or stop the breakdown by doing 3 things and we all know what they are.

  1. DIET-We must eat a healthy diet. Diets with sugars, preservatives, additives, etc. are not good for us and they add to the breakdown. You know me, I am a big believer in the paleo diet. Let’s eat like GOD designed our bodies to eat. When caveman was around there were none of those chemicals, so we ate healthily. Consequently, we were not overweight, and our bodies were fit. CAVEMAN HAD ALMOST NO CAVITIES AND NO GUM DISEASE-HE ALSO HAD NO TOOTHBRUSH, FLOSS, OR DENTIST.
  2. EXERCISE-we all know we should exercise but most of the research that I read indicates that only about 20% of us do something on a regular basis. According to the CDC, only 22.9% of American adults meet the necessary physical activity guidelines. Interestingly, I think it is closer to 10% of physicians and dentists meet those guidelines. Exercise is what keeps our bodies strong and resistant to breakdown. I had a boat mechanic tell me the other day that it is just like all the boats he works on. Most of them just sit there for weeks or months on end and then when we go to operate them, we are out of luck. Everything from boats to bodies will break down from not exercising. YOU CAN’T JUST SIT THERE. We also get fat. It is common knowledge that most people who don’t exercise have a BMI above 25 which means they are fat and worse yet they are obese. Is your BMI under 25? Go here to find out https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm
  3. ORAL HEALTH-According to Dr. Charles Mayo (founder of the “MAYO CLINIC”, preventative dentistry (flossing brushing, and avoiding sweets and sugar) will add 10 years to your life! According to many studies, between 80-90% of American adults do not floss daily

In our office, we did a very informal study about who we think are healthy patients. This of course is not accurate, but it fits into the above studies. I classified all my patients that were 65 and older into whether or not I thought they were healthy. I based it only on what I could see and read about them which included the following

  1. Did they brush and floss regularly? Did they have cavities and gum disease?
  2. Were they overweight based on appearance only?
  3. Did they have some diseases listed on their health history such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, etc?

And guess what? Pretty much the same results-80% were what we would consider unhealthy and 20% were healthy. 100% of the ones that I considered very healthy did the following things

  1. Flossed and brushed regularly and came in every 6 months for a cleaning.
  2. They seemed to eat healthily as they looked fit and healthy and had little or no gum disease or cavities.
  3. They exercised 5 or more times per week for roughly 30 minutes.

So, it seems to me that all the studies agree with my very informal study of my patients in my office. My study only came from about 100 patients that came in during the last month.

SUMMARY-It is obvious that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, GOOD ORAL HYGIENE, EATING PALEO AND REGULAR EXERCISE COULD ADD YEARS OF HEALTHY LIVING TO YOUR LIFE!! It’s never too late- Practice good oral hygiene, avoid sugar, and Go see your dentist and get back on track with regular cleanings. Follow that up by seeing your physician for a physical. EXERCISE 5 TIMES A WEEK FOR 30 MINUTES, EAT PALEO, AND BRUSH AND FLOSS DAILY!! Pay SPECIAL ATTENTION TO YOUR
DIET AND YOUR ORAL HYGIENE. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S ALL MAKE A COMMITMENT TO THESE THREE THINGS STARTING JANUARY 1, 2023!

“THE MOUTH IS THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH”. BRUSH AND FLOSS TWICE DAILY, AVOID SUGAR FOR 2022 AND SEE YOUR DENTIST AND PHYSICIAN REGULARLY.
