I believe the mouth is the WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH. I also believe that as individuals we need to take care of our health-nobody else is going to do it for us.

As many of you know, the Covid 19 Virus was officially announced in January of 2020. The government actually closed our dental office in March of 2020 for about 2.5 months as they deemed dental health was not considered an essential business. For many of you who had dental problems during that time, I’m sure you would disagree. Meanwhile, I have 2 virologist friends and we have been in communication during this 2.5-year time frame and they led me to do my informal study of the virus and the vaccines.

So, in our office, I have done an informal study of what has happened with our patients and would like to share that with you. Granted this is definitely an informal study and it is my opinion only.

  1. We have had 5 of our patients who were hospitalized and died of Covid-19. They were all past 65
years of age and they all had some other health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure etc.
They all died within that first year roughly (so by March of 2021)
  2. To the best of my knowledge, only two of these people had been vaccinated. The first vaccines were
distributed on December 15 of 2020.
  3. The interesting part of this study is that all 5 patients were not flossers. What I mean by that is that
they did not floss their teeth on a daily basis.
  4. All 5 patients did not rinse with Listerine or any alcohol-containing mouthwash on a regular basis.
  5. All 5 patients were past due for their cleaning.
  6. Gum disease has now been declared by the CDC as a Co-morbidity. Co-morbidity basically just
means that you have an additional health concern in addition to the Virus. So, a person with 2 or more health conditions is way more likely to die from Covid than those people with no extra health
    concerns.

My virologist friends explained to me that as far as your body is concerned if you have inflammation, your body will have an inflammatory response. An inflammatory response is defined as a defense mechanism that our bodies use to protect us from infection and or injury. Its purpose is to localize and eliminate the injurious agent and to remove damaged tissue and those components so that the body can begin to heal. The response is basically the same response whether it is tartar infecting your gums or a virus infecting your lungs. The biggest problem is when there is more than one infection or injury. In fact, another informal study in our office revolved around people who had a very bad reaction to the vaccine. Seems strange that one person has no reaction, and the next person is in bed for several days after the vaccination. Guess what? In our patient population, 80% of the ones who had a reaction to the vaccine were also non-flossers!

So now the story really gets interesting and so does the informal study. At the end of 2020, a German company did a study of healthcare workers that rinsed with Listerine 3 times a day vs. those who did not rinse with Listerine. Lo and behold the workers who rinsed with Listerine had 50% fewer cases of Covid-19. Why is that? It is because the virus can enter your body via the mouth or your nose. If it is in your mouth and you rinse it with Listerine, then the alcohol in the Listerine kills the virus and you do not get infected. Another similar study was a group of physicians who went to Viet Nam to study why that country had some of the lowest cases of Covid-19 in the world. In the study, they discovered that part of the culture is to rinse your nose with salt water daily just like brushing your teeth. So, the doctors concluded that rinsing your nose with salt water either washed out the virus or killed it. So, shortly after that, the American Association of ENT doctors came out with a recommendation that we should all rinse our noses daily with salt water. During this time, our office had a hygienist whose entire family got the virus except her. Guess what she does daily? She of course flosses daily rinses with Listerine daily and uses Navage (a machine that washes your nose with salt water-check it out). Since that time, our office has followed the same regimen and we have not had any cases of Covid-19!

So, the bottom line for all of this has several important components

  1. If you are over 65 your chances of dying from Covid 19 increase dramatically and especially if you have ANY other secondary comorbidities. Did you know that obesity is also a comorbidity? Maybe now is a good time to get on the Paleo diet and lose some weight and build your immune system up.
  2. Secondary infections (Like gum disease) can really increase your chance of severe infection or death from Covid-19.
  3. It is crucial that you floss, and rinse with Listerine and Navage on a daily basis. And DON’T EAT ANY SUGAR!

SUMMARY-It is obvious that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, GOOD ORAL HYGIENE, EATING PALEO, AND BUILDING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! It’s never too late- Practice good oral hygiene, avoid sugar, and Go see your dentist and get back on track with regular cleanings. Follow that up by seeing your physician for a physical. Pay SPECIAL ATTENTION TO YOUR DIET AND YOUR ORAL HYGIENE! PLEASE ELIMINATE SUGAR!

“THE MOUTH IS THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH”. BRUSH AND FLOSS TWICE DAILY, AVOID SUGAR FOR 2022 AND SEE YOUR DENTIST AND PHYSICIAN REGULARLY.
