Here we are for Labor Day and what am I doing-sitting around reading health articles as I always do.  Why do I read so much about it? Mainly because I don’t want to end up with dementia, strokes, wearing diapers or in a nursing home.  I’m pretty much sure we can avoid most of that if we just follow some basic principles.  For example, if you eat sugar, you can pretty much count on gaining weight, suffering from multiple diseases as sugar is linked to 45 different ones like heart attack, stroke, dementia, cancer and diabetes just to start.  Not to mention cavities and gum disease.  So, if sugar is so bad why does everyone do it?  It is mainly because it tastes so good and it is about 8 times more addictive than Cocaine.

So I have listed here 10 foods that will wreck your mouth with decay and gum disease and probably do a lot of damage to your overall health as they are linked  to multiple diseases and inflammation.  Please try the best you can to never eat any of these and should see an overall improvement in oral health as well as overall health.  These foods are basically high in SUGAR and unhealthy fats!

  1. COLA’S-Pretty much all colas contain about 10 teaspoons of sugar per bottle or can.  That is about 40 grams.  The American Heart Association says we should not have more than about 6 teaspoons per day and so one cola is way over your limit.  Also, many diet cola’s contain lots of chemicals and artificial sweeteners and many of those have been shown do overall damage to your health!
  2. Sugary breakfast cereals-They have added sugars, lack of fiber and are basically just empty calories.  Between cola’s and cereal it is no wonder that so many of our children have lots of cavities, they develop pre diabetes and many of them are overweight.  The average kid in America by age 5 already has 5 cavities!
  3. Candy bars-  I hope I don’t even need to discuss this one but in addition to causing cavities they are loaded with tons of SUGAR, unhealthy fats, lots of artificial ingredients/preservatives and who knows what kind of fats.  These promote weight gain, inflammation and decay!
  4. Fruit juice-This can be healthy for you but many of the juices we consume have very little actual fruit, but tons of Sugar and they can also be very acidic.  This can obviously cause lots of decay and basically they are not providing the healthy products you want.  Please read the labels.
  5. Baked goods such as cakes, donuts and cookies.  I read the other day that just one donut had contained over 600 calories and 30 grams of sugar not to mention the fats, sodium and lots of other calories.  Of course it depends upon the brand but I couldn’t find any that had any kind of nutritional value!
  6. Flavored Yogurt- this can be somewhat healthy but again you have to read the labels.  Most yogurt that I looked at had a ton of Sugar and much less nutritional value than what I wanted.  I think most of these go straight to the teeth or the belly and neither of these are on my list.
  7. Ice Cream-this is one of my favorites and as a child we used to make it at home with a hand crank machine.  Most of the ones I looked at had about 15-20 grams of sugar and 7-10 grams of fat.  Sounds like cavities and obesity to me.
  8. Sweetened Granola bars-many of these are promoted as all natural or organic etc. when in reality they just contribute over 10 grams of sugar and at best about 3 grams of protein and 7 grams of fat.  This leads to cavities, weight gain and belly fat
  9. Protein bars and protein drinks-  I actually have some of this on a regular basis but as always you must read the labels.  I have found several that have no added sugar so if you are careful, you can find a healthy one.
  10. Ketchup-most of the major brands have a lot of sugar.  A 20 oz bottle of Ketchup has 2/3 of a cup of sugar.  How much ketchup do your kids put on their French fries???  Many other sauces are also loaded such as salad dressing, BBQ sauce, honey mustard etc.  Please read the labels!!!

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, HERE ARE 10 PROCESSED FOODS THAT ARE EXTREMELY LOADED WITH TONS OF SUGAR AND OTHER CHEMICALS THAT I BELIEVE ARE UNHEALTHY.  PLEASE READ THE LABELS OF EVERYTHING IN A CONTAINER.  BY LAW THE NUTRITION FACTS HAVE TO BE LISTED.  I FOUND SUGAR IN MORTONS SALT THE OTHER DAY!!! READ THE LABELS AND AVOID THE JUNK OR THE PROCESSED FOODS.
