As most of you know by now, I am passionately against sugar.  It is linked to or causes about 45 different diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, cancer, diabetes, dementia, and lung disease just to mention a few.

I know a lot of us were stuck at home without electricity this past week with hurricane BERYL.  Most of my friends and neighbors were bored and they snacked a lot.  This made me think –“IS THERE A RIGHT WAY AND A WRONG WAY TO SNACK?”  In my opinion most people shouldn’t do it but the ones that do are doing it the wrong way.

In some cases, a snack is beneficial-it can stop the hunger pains, boost energy, and help you recover from a workout.  But in my opinion, there is a RIGHT and a WRONG way to do it.  First of all, I think most snacks are junk food and most snacks just add to the overall daily calories and thus weight gain.  According to a study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Americans are snacking on average 2-3 times per day!  And they are getting 23% of their calories just from snacks.  That is almost like a FOURTH MEAL!  Also, the snacks in general or junk foods like cookies, chips, candy bars etc. that are loaded with Sugar!  I found 25 grams of sugar in a small snack from the grocery store of crackers, cheese and some grapes.  According to the American Heart Association that is more than your entire daily allowance of sugar just for heart health!  What about your dental health???

So, let’s talk about healthy snacks and the right and wrong way to do them.  I believe that a health snack is one with no sugar such as celery or peanuts and some vegetables.  I also like to dip broccoli into humus or with some almond butter.  Many times after a workout, I will eat a protein bar but you have to be careful to find one that is low in sugar and hopefully no sugar.  You can also find some Paleo Slim Jim type sausage with no sugar.  The point is to try and find something you like that is very low or no Sugar.

Now let’s talk about when is the right time and wrong time to snack.  First of all we all know that we are supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day.  I have found that when I’m hungry and wanting a snack I will just go drink a big glass of water and then often the hunger just goes away.  Great way to get our water and cut back on snacks.  The absolute worst time to have a snack is after dinner.  In most cases we have already brushed our teeth and many times if you snack you will go to bed without re brushing and of course this can lead to cavities and gum infections.  So, DON’T EAT A SNACK AFTER DINNER!

If you snack during the day, it is often times at work and someone brings candy or other junk food.  I try my best not to even go in the kitchen as I know something will be there.  But if I do, I will first grab a big glass of water.

Bottom line is that I think you should skip snacks as they often contribute to decay, gum infection and weight gain and since they are usually processed foods they may contribute to heart attacks, stroke, cancer and diabetes etc.  so please avoid them.  If you have to have something, go for whole protein like a chicken leg or some vegetables.  If you are eating candy and junk, be sure to brush after every snack.

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, you and I both COULD IMPROVE OUR HEALTH BY ELIMINATING SNACKS.  IF YOU MUST, THEN READ THE LABELS AND AVOID THE JUNK OR YOU WILL BECOME PART OF MY ANNUITY PLAN!!
