YES!!—Sugar can raise triglycerides and also significantly affect cholesterol even though it does not contain cholesterol itself! Here is the bottom line!
SUGAR AND TRIGLYCERIDES
Absolutely yes! Sugar can directly raise your triglycerides
- Sugar and especially added sugars and refined carbohydrates are converted by your liver into triglycerides!
- Sugar intake and particularly fructose as in table sugar and high fructose corn syrup is STRONGLY associated with elevated triglycerides.
- High triglycerides increase the risk of:
*Cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and hardening of the arteries
*Fatty Liver Disease
*Insulin Resistance and Diabetes
SUGAR AND CHOLESTEROL
Sugar affects cholesterol indirectly but significantly:
- Raises LDL which is the BAD cholesterol
- Lowers HDL which is the good or protective cholesterol
- Promotes the formation of small, dense LDL particles which are more inflammatory and dangerous
- Increases systemic inflammation, which worsens lipid metabolism
Even in people who eat low fat, high sugar intake can worsen your cholesterol profiles and bloodwork.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER AND WHO CARES?
From an oral systemic perspective:
- High sugar intake leads to insulin resistance and chronic inflammation
- Chronic inflammation leads to worsened periodontal (gum) disease and cardiovascular disease
- Elevated triglycerides are also associated with gum disease
THIS ALIGNS WELL WITH MY OVERALL THEME-“THE MOUTH IS THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH”! IGNORE YOUR HEALTH AND IT WILL GO AWAY
BOTTOM LINE
SUGAR DOESN’T CONTAIN CHOLESTEROL, BUT IT DRIVES THE BODY TO MAKE MORE TRIGLYCERIDES AND UNHEALTHY CHOLESTEROL INCREASING INFLAMMATION AND DISEASE RISK.
IN MY OPINION, SUGAR IS POISON AND WE NEED TO AVOID IT!
SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup AND see what he has to say about your lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and lower triglycerides. Also, in my opinion almost all sugar is not healthy, and YOU SHOULD try hard to avoid it. If you are eating the Standard American Diet, then you asking to get sick and suffer as in Diabetes stroke, heart attack, cancer, Alzheimers, gum disease and decay. Let’s all work together to get healthier in 2026.
The doctors and staff are behind you and please call us if we can help. 713-781-2800. Also, please call or email JENNA NIXON if you need some detailed NUTRITIONAL counseling from a true WELL-TRAINED professional and call Dr. John Seger if you have any heart issues.

In my opinion, this is the finest toothbrush ever made. The best part is the red and blue light technology that reduces inflammation and kills bacteria. It is awesome and if you use the QR code you will get a big discount. Try it out.
