I recently came across a possible substitute for sugar and it seems to be natural with no SUGAR and it is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar.  It sounds weird but it has been around hundreds of years.  It is MONK FRUIT.  It is a tiny melon and part of the gourd family similar to pumpkins.

When it comes to taste, Monk Fruit has a very sweet flavor compared to regular sugar which means a little goes a long way.  I have been trying it in my coffee for the last several months and I’m really getting to like it.  I also add protein powder to my coffee as people past 50 need more protein.  Adding the monk fruit tends to improve the taste for me without adding any sugar or any calories!  That is hard to believe.  So far, most of the research highlights monk fruit for people living with diabetes.  The FDA has approved it and you can buy it in a powder or drops over the counter. Also, Monk Fruit does not cause a spike in blood sugar because it has no carbs.

For years Monk Fruit has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for sore throat and constipation.  There have been many studies concerning Monk Fruit and it is recommended by the American Diabetes Association. I personally like it with my coffee and I only use 3-4 drops.  As with everything, I think we should not overdo it and more research is needed.  Let me know what you think.
