This blog is next in our series about your mouth being the gateway to Whole Body Health. There are zillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi that live in the mouth. And every day we swallow and breathe this conglomeration. As they travel downstream there is potential for infecting tonsils, lungs, intestines and spreading from there. No wonder that oral health is linked to about 45 different diseases or conditions.
The Quiet Truth About Aging-I’m speaking from experience
Most people think aging is simply about time. But modern science shows something deeper: Your body can age faster — or slower — depending on how you live.
And one of the strongest influences may be something most people eat every day:
Ultra-processed foods. What Are Ultra-Processed Foods?
Ultra-processed foods are products that are industrially manufactured rather than naturally prepared. They often contain:
- Refined starches and sugars
- Industrial oils
- Artificial flavorings or sweeteners
- Emulsifiers, stabilizers, preservatives
- Additives not used in home kitchens
Common examples:
- Packaged snack foods
- Sugary cereals
- Processed meats
- Soda and sweetened drinks
- Instant meals
These foods are designed for shelf life, convenience, and hyper-palatability — not biological nourishment.
The Science: Can Food Affect Your Biological Age?
Researchers now measure something called biological age — how old your cells and tissues behave, regardless of your calendar age.
Recent large population studies have shown:
- Higher intake of ultra-processed foods is associated with accelerated biological aging
- People who consume more of these foods often show blood markers consistent with older internal age
- The relationship persists even after adjusting for calorie intake and overall diet quality
In simple terms:
Two people can be the same age, but the one eating more ultra-processed foods may have a body that functions years older.
Why Might Ultra-Processed Foods Speed Aging?
Scientists believe several mechanisms may be involved:
- Chronic inflammation
Additives, refined sugars, and damaged fats may increase inflammatory signaling. - Oxidative stress
Highly processed ingredients can increase free-radical damage to cells. - Microbiome disruption
Food additives and low fiber intake can negatively affect gut and oral bacteria. - Metabolic strain
Rapidly absorbed carbohydrates and altered food structure may impair glucose and lipid metabolism.
Why This Matters for Oral Health
Your mouth is not separate from your body — it is the gateway.
Diets high in ultra-processed foods are associated with:
- Increased gum inflammation and infection
- Higher risk of decay-most processed foods have tons of sugar-read the label
- Poor saliva quality
- Greater systemic inflammatory load-did you know that gum disease is considered a co-morbidity for the Covid-19 Virus???
And inflammation in the mouth can influence:
- Heart health
- Immune function
- Metabolism
- Brain health
What to Eat Instead
The solution is not perfection. It is direction.
Focus on whole, minimally processed foods:
- Fresh Vegetables and fruits-not the ones in cans
- Nuts and seeds
- Clean proteins-I prefer wild caught, pasture raised, cage free etc. NOT FARM RAISED
- Healthy fats
- Natural fiber sources
A helpful guideline:
If your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize it as food, your cells may not either.
Healthy aging is not about chasing youth.
It is about preserving function, vitality, and independence for as long as possible.
Reducing ultra-processed foods is one of the simplest, safest, and most powerful steps you can take — for your mouth, your body, and your future.
This is one of the reasons why I love The PALEO DIET. It does not allow for processed foods and most people that follow this diet have a lower biological age compared to their chronological age. I have one patient that is 78 and his chronological age is 65
