This past week Hurricane Beryl blew through Houston and I have been unable to work all week because the power was out to my building.  So as usual, when I’m bored, I read stuff about HEALTH.  In case you can’t tell, I’m somewhat of a health nerd.  My main motivation is that I don’t want to leave my wife and family stuck with some old man who doesn’t know where he is and someone has to change my diapers.  So, my main goal is to live a healthy life and when its’ my time, I just die in my sleep.  That is easier said than done but so many folks live such a horrible lifestyle that they have strokes and cancer and dementia etc. which makes the last 10 years of your life miserable and puts a real strain on your family (assuming you don’t die instantly from your stroke or heart attack etc.)  Because of that, I have come with my list of things that I can do to help me stay healthy.  Some of these are obvious and some not so much, so please bear with me.  This is a compilation of about 20 articles and it is also my opinion of will work best based on my research.

  1. EAT PALEO-The main reason I like paleo is because it is easy and in my opinion it is extremely healthy. In fact, I think it is better than the Mediterranean Diet because you don’t eat past and bread which in general goes straight to my mid-section.  It reminds me of the old computer quote-“GARBAGE IN/GARBAGE OUT”!  If you eat garbage, you will get sick and die sooner and usually be miserable along the way.
  2. EXERCISE-According to all of the health writers (Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Peter Attia, Dr. Al Danenberg, Dr. Steven Hotze, Dr. Steven Sinatra and many others) that I follow, EXERCISE IS NOT AN OPTION! Exercise helps your body to fight off all of the assaults that come our way.  I believe that a reasonable exercise like walking and strength training will add a good ten years to your life.
  3. LIMIT OR ELIMINATE SUGAR-As far as I’m concerned it is poison. It is linked to at least 45 different medical conditions such as stroke, heart attack, Type II Diabetes, dementia, tooth decay and gum disease.  That should be enough to scare you away but then there are about 40 more like cancer, liver disease and on and on!  The American Heart Association says that we should max out at about 6 teaspoons (24 grams) per day.  As a dentist I think it should be none or maybe 2 teaspoons!
  4. EAT MORE NUTS-It may sound a little nutty, but eating more nuts can add to a healthy long life and two Harvard studies confirm that eating nuts daily makes you less likely to die of heart disease, cancer etc.
  5. FLOSS AND BRUSH YOUR TEETH 2 TIMES PER DAY AND SEE THE DENTIST FOR YOUR CLEAININGS-Dr. Charles Mayo said that this will add 10 years to your life! I have come up with my 10/10/10 rule.  Spend 10 minutes day (5 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon) brushing and flossing very well and it will save you about 10K in the future of expensive dental bills and add 10 years to your life.  This is because gum disease is an infection and it can and will spread to other parts of your body and wreak havoc!
  6. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER-We are made up of about 65% water. You have heard it for years but we all need to drink more water, and this will drastically increase your chance of a long healthy life.
  7. COOK AT HOME INSTEAD OF EATING OUT-I read an article that said only about 5% of restaurant meals are healthy for you because they add so much sugar and salt etc. to make everything taste better!
  8. DRINK IN MODERATION-American Heart Association says 1 drink per day for women and 2 drinks a day for men MAX- Also it appears that the clear drinks are better for you vs the colored drinks and of course don’t mix things with sugared drinks!
  9. GET ENOUGH SLEEP-your body needs about 7-8 hours of good sleep to allow your body to repair and regenerate.
  10. LAUGH MORE OFTEN-laughter is truly the best medicine and that’s why the mouth is the window to your health. Research says that those with a sense of humor lived on average about 8 years longer than the scrooges.
  11. DON’T QUIT WORKING-research says we need something to get up for in the morning. I did a research project and found that 80% of the people I interviewed after retiring really wished that they had not quit.  20% said that they loved retirement because they played golf (of something) every day.  If you don’t have something to go to then don’t quit.
  12. GET REGULAR MEDICAL AND DENTAL CHECKUPS-no matter the problem, the sooner you find it, the better chance you have of fixing it. In the dental field, if you ignore a small cavity, it will get bigger and that could mean a root canal, extraction, bridge, implant or crown etc.  All of which are extremely expense!
  13. STAY SOCIALLY ACTIVE-this will boost your mood and sharpen your mind. Plus, without it life can get pretty boring!
  14. MANAGE YOUR STRESS-managing this is essential. Chronic stress can cause you to grind your teeth or have a heart attack.  We must manage this.  Just eliminate or delegate those really stressful things in your life.
  15. QUIT SMOKING-There is no good side to this habit. It causes a lot of gum disease and dental infections not mention what it does to your heart.  QUIT!
  16. PRAYER OR MEDITATION-This can lower blood pressure and boost your immune system. Philippians 4:6 says “WORRY ABOUT NOTHING AND PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING!”

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, you and i both COULD IMPROVE OUR HEALTH AND LONGEVITY AND I’M REALLY FOCUSED ON NOT GOING TO A NURSING HOME AND NOT WEARING DIAPERS! FOCUS ON THE ABOVE AND THIS SHOULD ADD QUALITY YEARS TO YOUR LIFE!
