As the holidays are upon us and we all overconsume, I have become very aware of the health of our children.  I read in an article that American Children are the unhealthiest children in the world.  I’m not sure where that statistic came from, but it listed that 71% are considered overweight or obese.  It also listed that we have the highest rate of child diabetes in the world!  How can that be??  One thing that they forgot to mention in this article was the severe rampant decay in American children.  According to an article by the National Institute of Dental Research several years back-the average 5-year-old child in America already had 5 cavities!  How can that be?  There also seems to be differences in children from different economic levels and different ethnic levels.  So, over the weekend, I researched decay and children in America and here is what I found.  I would assume a lot of this also applies to obesity levels, diabetes etc.  Here is what I found.

A significant portion of cases involve children with UNTREATED DECAY.  In other words, they had a cavity that was not filled.  Mexican American children tend to have a higher rate of tooth decay compared to non-Hispanic white children.

There was a much higher prevalence of untreated decay among children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds

A large number of parents of children with UNTREATED DECAY thought that it was not necessary to fill children’s baby teeth since they were going to lose them anyway.

Between 2019 and 2021 the number of children who had seen a dentist for a cleaning and dental exam had dropped significantly.  The change cannot be clearly attributed to the Covid 19 Pandemic, but in my opinion there has to be some connection.

According to the CDC, there are multiple causes of this rampant decay in America

  1. Poor oral hygiene
  2. Diet-America has the largest consumption of sugar in the world. If you eat sugar, you will usually get decay.  Poor oral hygiene combined with massive sugar and I can almost 100% guarantee your children will get cavities.
  3. Medications-some medications can dry out your mouth and this can lead to lots of decay. For many children it can be ADHD medications

In my opinion I have some advice to offer to help cut down on this RAMPANT DECAY and POOR HEALTH OF AMERICAN CHILDREN.

  1. CUT THE SUGAR! The Average American consumes about 200 pounds per year.  No wonder tooth decay and diabetes!!
  2. Take your kids to the dentist for cleanings and exams twice a year.
  3. Make sure that you show them how to brush and floss and then make sure that they do it-MOST DO NOT!
  4. Ask your children if they have a dry mouth. If they do, consult your pediatrician and your dentist asap.
  5. CUT OUT ALL PROCESSED FOODS AND ALL SUGAR- AS PARENTS IT COULD BE YOUR FAULT THAT THEY ARE HAVING THESE PROBLEMS!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

Spiker – Matt

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, lets visit our physician for that annual checkup!  What do you think?  I also think that we should all try our best to eliminate sugar and processed foods from our diet and eat like a caveman.  MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR CHILDREN TO PROVE THAT THEY BRUSH THEIR TEETH.
