A recent study came out linking cavities and gum disease to higher risk of stroke.  I don’t know about you, but I would rather be dead than to spend the rest of my life in bed with someone changing my diapers and spoon feeding me because I had a stroke.  Avoiding strokes is one of my main goals as I get older.

Oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) has been linked many times to multiple health conditions ranging from heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, alzheimers etc., but now research shows that people with both conditions have a notably higher risk of stroke.  The University of South Carolina completed a 21 year study and limited it to only individuals with both conditions.

They found that individuals with both decay and gum disease had almost twice the risk of stroke when compared to people with good oral health even after allowing for cardiovascular risk factors.

The Study found that the worse the oral health the greater the risk of stroke.  The study showed that those with only gum disease had a 44% increased risk of stroke and those with gum disease and cavities had an 86 percent increased risk.  More research is needed but the study definitely suggests that inflammation and bacteria from the mouth can spread to other areas of the body by entering the blood stream, swallowing them and breathing them which worsens the risk for stroke.  It seems obvious to me that improving your oral health is an important part of stroke prevention.  Of course, there a several ways to improve oral health such as diet, brushing and flossing.  In my opinion, here are areas that need serious attention if you are trying to avoid a stroke

*STOP SMOKING!-smoking leads to gum disease

*EAT HEALTY-I personally like the Paleo Diet-it has no sugar, dairy or grain

*FLOSSING-Best way to remove food from between teeth and under gums

*BRUSH-Best way to remove food debris from teeth we recommend

We recommend the Oralucent Sonic Toothbrush

I hope and pray that this blog will set you on a path to reach your goals for 2026 and find your guide to a better, longer, healthier life!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup.  Also, in my opinion almost all sugar and FAKE sugar is not healthy, and YOU SHOULD try hard to avoid it.   If you are eating the Standard American Diet, then you asking to get sick and as shown by this study you will double your risk of stroke if you have gum disease and decay.  NOW IS THE TIME TO PLAN AND FOCUS ON ORAL HEALTH.  WE HOPE THAT IMPROVING DENTAL HEALTH IS AT THE TOP OF YOUR LIST.

The doctors and staff are behind you and please call us if we can help.               713-781-2800.  Also, please call or email JENNA NIXON if you need some detailed NUTRITIONAL counseling from a true WELL-TRAINED professional and call Dr. John Seger if you have any heart issues.

REMEMBER, “YOU DON’T HAVE TO FLOSS ALL OF YOUR TEETH, JUST THE ONES YOU WANT TO KEEP”!

In my opinion, this is the finest toothbrush ever made.  The best part is the red and blue light technology that reduces inflammation and kills bacteria.  It is awesome and if you use the QR code you will get a big discount.  Try it out.
