I know that you have heard me mention a few zillion times that we Americans are consuming too much SUGAR!  In 1950 the average American consumed about 2 pounds of sugar per year and in 2024 estimates are about 200 pounds per year.  In my opinion (Since Sugar is linked to about 45 other diseases), SUGAR IS KILLING US!  From a dental standpoint it sure is keeping dentists’ fat and happy, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could cut back on SUGAR and in addition to a lot fewer cavities, you will also be a lot healthier.

SO HERE ARE SOME SIGNS THAT YOU ARE EATING WAY TOO MUCH SUGAR!  I think it is important for you to listen to what your body is telling you and then stop ignoring the signs.  It is vital to your dental health and also overall health!  Check out these 10 signs and see if any apply to you.

  1. BLEEDING GUMS-sugar feeds the bad bacteria in your mouth and if not removed this can lead to gum infections. Bleeding gums is almost always a sign of an infection.  It could also be an early sign of Scurvy which is caused from lack of Vitamin C.  Sugar will deplete your vitamin C.  Bleeding gums are a major sign of gum disease, and you need to see your dentist right away.
  2. DECAY-decay is caused from feeding the bad bacteria in your mouth with sugar. It can also be from too much starch (carbohydrates) which break down into sugar.  When the bacteria eat the sugar they then release an acid on your teeth which gradually eats a hole into your tooth or teeth.  If you don’t eat sugar or starches then you almost never get a cavity.
  3. FREQUENT INFECTIONS-Having too much sugar can definitely damage your immune system. A damaged immune system says that you are more likely to get other infections such as colds, pneumonia etc.  Listen to your body.
  4. CHRONIC SINUS ISSUES-Lots of people blame their sinus issues on allergies (and it can be from that) but also Sugar feeds fungus and without cutting back on Sugar you can have chronic sinus drainage etc. Try cutting back to no sugar for a month and see if your nasal issues clear up.
  5. WEIGHT GAIN-Obviously sugar has a lot of calories. Too much sugar often increases your weight.  Lots of people cut out sugar and the pounds just fall off.  Being overweight also leads to lots of other health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease as well as dementia.  If you are overweight start the year off right and just eliminate SUGAR and watch what happens.
  6. BELLY FAT-Too much sugar is linked to dangerous belly fat. When you eat too much sugar the excess is converted to fat and in most people goes straight to the belly.  This fat tissue releases unhealthy chemicals into the bloodstream which can go to the heart or brain etc.  I call it DUNLOP’S DISEASE= your belly done lop over your belt!
  7. PREMATURE AGING-did you know that too much sugar causes your body to produce less collagen. A reduction in collagen manifests itself as loose wrinkled skin i.e. you look older!
  8. HEADACHES-headaches can be a sign of too much sugar which can lead to headaches in certain individuals. Sugar can definitely lead to a spike in blood sugar and this can be a sign of diabetes or prediabetes.  If you are having regular headaches go to your physician and dentist.
  9. POOR SLEEP-too much sugar can ruin your sleep and then you wake up hungry and head to the refrigerator and eat more sugar leading to less sleep, tooth decay, weight gain and heart disease. Quality sleep also adds to longevity.
  10. DIABETES-One article I read said that 42% of Americans had type II diabetes or pre diabetes. I believe that in general diabetes will shorten your life by about 10 years but it can sometimes be a very miserable end with feet amputations, heart surgery etc.  YOU DON’T WANT DIABETES in any form.  SUGAR IS ONE OF THE FACTORS IN DIABETES and the more you eat the worse it can get.

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup AND LET’S AVOID SUGAR!    LET’S EAT HEALTHY.  REMEMBER, THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SAYS YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE MORE THAN 6 TEASPOONS OF SUGAR PER DAY.  I VOTE FOR 0!
