I don’t know about you, but I am really glad that this election stuff is over.  I haven’t seen our nation this divided in my lifetime.  But this morning I read an article about RFK wanting to “MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN”!  Well, I’m in favor of that but what does it mean and what is involved?  I found the info to be very interesting, but it seems there will be a huge shakeup coming in our health system starting with the FDA (Federal Drug Administration).  As part of this shakeup, RFK has indicated that he wants to demolish part of the FDA such as removing Fluoride from out public water supply and making childhood vaccines non-compulsory!  Also, as part of his plan he wants to end heart disease as he believes that it is caused by the standard American diet (called SAD).This means to me that there will be a major crackdown on unhealthy eating.  Sounds good so far, but if I understand correctly Trump eats a McDonalds hamburger every day.  I hope this means that he will also change his eating habits.  I would love to talk to his personal dentist to see how his oral health is going.  Maybe he will come see me since he knows President Bush was my patient????

In addition, Robert F Kennedy has close ties with Dr. Aseem Malhotra who is a cardiologist.  Rumor has it that they have big plans to drastically reduce heart disease in America.  I’m in favor of that as I know that sugar and processed foods are a very big contributor with links to heart disease, cancer, diabetes etc. but my question is how they plan to do that.  It makes sense to start with education in our schools and hopefully get the schools on board to provide nutritious low sugar foods.  Our kids eat too much junk anyway, so it would be nice if they could have at least one nutritious meal per day!

Dr. Malhotra has been on Podcasts etc. discussing all the heart issues from too much pizza, beer, burgers and other high calorie, high sugar processed foods.  The article I read said that Dr. Malhotra and RFK would like to promote that processed junk food is the new tobacco, and they have discussed imposing a “FAT TAX” on the unhealthy snack foods that we Americans all consume.  What they haven’t discussed is that with eliminating or taxing these foods, many Americans will also eliminate a lot of decay and gum disease in addition to heart disease.  I like that!

According to RFK, there are 3 strategies in public health that they call the “THREE A’s”- Availability, Acceptability and Affordability.

As far as availability is concerned you can tackle processed junk foods just like they tackled smoking bans.  I don’t understand why St Lukes hospital has a McDonalds in their lobby anyway.  About 70% of the schools in America allow highly processed sugary foods and candies etc. and this actually tells our kids and the public that it is ok to consume this junk.  So, if it’s not available because it is bad for you then some people may get the point.  That means if it is not available then it must not be acceptable (or so the government says).  And of course, if you place a “FAT TAX” on those foods then it will eliminate a lot of us eating those foods because they are so expensive.  Has that worked with cigarettes?

I personally hate taxes, and I hate the government telling me what I can eat and not eat but it makes sense if we can eliminate heart disease, premature death and lots of cavities.  As with anything that the government does, we will have to wait and see.  What do you think we should do?  Do you have any better ideas?  If so, please send me an email- spiker@cosmeticdentalassociates.net  Maybe we can come up with a plan and I will give them my input.  Otherwise, have a very

HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, lets visit our physician for that annual checkup!  What do you think?  I also think that we should all try our best to eliminate sugar and processed foods from our diet and eat like a caveman.  according to dr. malhotra eliminating that would save over 600,000 lives per year!
