I believe the mouth is the WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH. I also think that as individuals we need to take care of our health-nobody else is going to do it for us.

As a big follower of the PALEO DIET or the Paleo Lifestyle, I am really shocked at how much shocking stuff goes into our mouths on a daily basis. I read an article the other day that about 90% of everything we eat has some form of chemicals added to it! How can that be healthy in any form? I also read that about 68% of everything that comes in a package, or a container has sugar! No wonder we have gone from consuming about 2 pounds of sugar per year in 1950 to consuming about 200 pounds of sugar per year in 2020. I believe consuming all of these chemicals and all of this sugar has a lot to do with our overall health. In general, the Paleo Diet does NOT want you to eat all that stuff. The PALEO DIET generally wants you to eat healthy, organic unprocessed foods as our PRIMAL ancestors ate. It’s hard to do, but the health benefits continue to impress me daily and when I cheat, I can tell the difference. So, in all of my reading and research and when consulting with my fellow physicians and dentists I have discovered what I think is the single worst carbohydrate for your heart and for your oral health. In my opinion, the single worst carbohydrate has to be all of the SUGAR BEVERAGES!

COLA’S and all of the other SUGARY BEVERAGES are simple carbohydrates, that when consumed are released into the bloodstream more quickly than most other foods and usually cause a severe and dramatic increase in blood sugar levels. There are many studies that show SUGAR BEVERAGES WILL CAUSE CAVITIES. But there are also lots of studies that show people who drink these types of sugary beverages have higher triglycerides and an increased risk of HEART DISEASE!

One of those studies from 2020 in the Journal of the American Heart Association looked specifically at the association between Sugar drinks and cholesterol profiles. They found that people who drank one or more drinks per day had lower HDL (Good Cholesterol) and an increase in harmful triglycerides compared to those who drank less. Many other studies related to the intake of SUGAR in any form could also have similar negative effects on your body and on the health of your teeth and gums. Excess sugar in my opinion is a major contributor to diabetes, cavities, gum disease, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. One study from the Journal of American Medical Association Internal Medicine showed that people who consumed 17-21% of their calories from these
added sugars had a 38% higher risk of dying from Cardiovascular disease compared to people who got 8% of their calories from added Sugar.

As the old saying goes-“ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME”. In my opinion, SUGAR IS POISON! It causes cavities, and gum disease and is linked to many other conditions such as CANCER, DIABETES, STROKE, etc. Please eliminate SUGAR FROM YOUR DIET IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. Also, be aware that SUGAR DRINKS are loaded with SUGAR (Most Sugar Drinks such as Cola’s have about 10 teaspoons of SUGAR per container) and in my opinion are the worst carbohydrates that you can consume for your overall health!!!

SUMMARY-It is obvious that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, SUGAR AND SUGAR DRINKS ARE CAUSING LOTS OF HEALTH PROBLEMS BUT ESPECIALLY CAVITIES, GUM DISEASE, AND HEART DISEASE! It’s never too late- Practice good oral hygiene, avoid sugar go see your dentist, and get back on track with regular cleanings. Follow that up by seeing your physician for a physical. Pay SPECIAL ATTENTION TO YOUR DIET AND YOUR ORAL HYGIENE!
