The number one cause of death in the United States is heart disease followed by cancer.  I personally don’t want either one of those.  Since I am a chronic reader of health topics and I have multiple doctors as patients, I put together a list of the top 10 tips to help prevent heart disease and some of them also relate to cancer.  So here are Spiker’s top 10 tips and I suggest you ask your doctor what they think.  It will be interesting to see what RFK and our government will recommend but I am sure you will see a very similar list

  1. DO NOT SMOKE-smokers are twice as likely to have heart disease or cancer!
  2. ELIMINATE SUGAR FROM YOUR DIET-the American Heart Association recommends no more the 6 tablespoons of sugar per day. As a dentist, I recommend 0-2 tablespoons per day.  Sugar can increase blood pressure and chronic inflammation, cause gum disease and cavities and it is linked to about 30 different diseases!  A public Health study from Harvard found that sugar sweetened drinks will increase your risk of heart attack no matter how much you exercise!  AVOID SUGAR!
  3. AVOID PROCESSED FOOD-anything that has a label on it is considered a processed food. Most of them have high sugar, high fat, high salt and tons of chemicals to prevent spoilage while they sit in a truck or on the shelf at the grocery store.  As far as I’m concerned, all of these chemicals etc. are very unhealthy and should be avoided.
  4. AVOID FAST FOOD-This is very similar to processed food and in fact many fast foods are processed foods. Typical fast foods can lead to heart attacks, cancer, stroke and lots of cavities.
  5. GET YOUR BMI NORMALhttps://www.cdc.gov/bmi/adult-calculator/index.html If your level is over 25 you are considered fat.  If the number is 30 or more, you are considered obese.  In my case I lost about 20 pounds (BMI was then 23.6)and my blood pressure dropped from 120/80 to 100/60.  My cardiologist was very happy with that.
  6. GET YOUR WAIST TO HIP RATIO NORMAL-this is similar to BMI in that if you are in the normal range the chance of heart attack is greatly reduced. Normal for males is 95 or lower.  Normal for females is 0.80 or lower.  Go measure your waist and hips now and see what yours is!
  7. SHED BELLY FAT-excess belly fat is heavily linked to heart attack, stroke hypertension, elevated triglycerides, fatty liver, elevated lipids. That is called metabolic syndrome that and it’s a killer!
  8. EXERCISE-all research pretty much indicates that you need 150 minutes minimum per week of aerobic exercise (walking, biking, swimming etc.) and 2 days of muscle strengthening (go to the gym and get a trainer) per week.
  9. LOWER ALCOHOL INTAKE-please watch your alcohol consumption as excessive amounts can cause dental disease, harm your heart, raise blood pressure and can be linked to several forms of cancer.
  10. VISIT YOUR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS ON A REGULAR BASIS-just like going to the dentist helps to prevent or discover problems such as gum disease and cavities before they get out of hand. The same advice applies to all of your medical professionals.  I personally visit my internist, cardiologist, urologist, ENT and gastroenterologist on a regular basis.  I want to find problems when they are small rather than wait till I show up at the hospital.  Prevention is key.  I also have a nutritionist that I visit once a year just to check on my diet.  As you know, I follow the paleo diet and so far, following these 10 tips, I have avoided taking any medication and avoided heart disease, cancer etc.  Please stay on top of it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
