In today’s world we hear all the time about the Microbiome. What the heck is that? The microbiome is defined as a community of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses living in or on the body. Your body is home to about 1 trillion of these bugs. What we hear a lot about is the GUT microbiome because the bugs that live there have a huge impact on your immune system or they can affect your health such as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease etc. Your gut microbiome can even affect your mood or sharpen your cognition. What we don’t hear much about is the mouth microbiome. I think it is because there has not been as much research on the oral microbiome. However, the mouth microbiome is the second most diverse microbiome in humans. A healthy mouth microbiome helps to prevent decay and gum disease, but it also can contribute to your overall health.
Think of it this way-if you have a gum infection or inflammation or decay, it is usually because the bad bugs in your mouth have taken over. Then on top of that you swallow about 2000 times per day, so you are swallowing bacteria, viruses, and or fungi all day long. How does this affect your gut microbiome. I personally think it creates a lot of problems and issues. The average human mouth has Billions of bacteria living there AND more than 700 different varieties. Many of these are Staph or Strep (As in Strep throat etc.). It is important to note that an overgrowth of bad bacteria can lead to gum infections, abscessed teeth, tonsilitis, strep throat etc. and you are swallowing this 2000 times a day. What does that do to your intestines? I and many other researchers are of the belief that many of these infections in other parts of the body originated in the mouth. i.e. “THE MOUTH IS THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH!”
So, the number and severity of bad bacteria and virus’s etc. are dependent on two main factors.
- DIET-bacteria have to eat and the type of food you feed them will increase or decrease the bad guys. For example, an increase in Strep Mutans will cause gum infections. Other strains lead to tonsilitis or decay etc. So, the name of the game is “DON’T FEED THE BAD GUYS!” AND GUESS WHAT THEIR FAVORITE FOOD IS??? SUGAR!!! The flip side is that if you eat a healthy diet without sugar and chemicals and additives etc. then you are feeding the good bacteria and the bad bacteria don’t have as much of a chance to create problems and infections etc.
- ORAL HYGIENE– regular brushing and flossing will remove or kill the bad germs. It is essential for oral health that you brush and floss daily. Ideally, that means after every time you eat-including snacks!
So, the bottom-line is DON’T FEED THE BAD GUYS AND REMOVE THEM AFTER EVERY MEAL.
In our office, we consider the mouth to be the window to your health. The main reason is because your mouth holds clues to what’s going on with your overall health. During a regular dental checkup, your dentist can search for clues that possibly indicate other serious health issues. Dentists can detect more than 120 signs and symptoms of nondental diseases by examining your mouth, head and neck. Plus, more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases have oral manifestations. This means that if something is wrong in your mouth, then something could be wrong in another part of your body. Dentists can also perform thorough oral cancer exams, including inspection of the oral cavity and neck. Since cancers of the mouth, tongue and jaw are usually first discovered during dental exams, dentists are at the forefront for saving lives. There are multiple clues that dentists may see that could possibly indicate a serious problem.
