As you all know, I am a big PALEO diet fanatic.  There are multiple reasons why, such as no Dairy, no grains, no sugar etc. but for me it is a really easy lifestyle (what’s wrong with chicken and vegetables or fish and salad etc) so it is easy to stick to and I think it is the healthiest of all diets since it follows Caveman (Paleo) and I think that is how God programmed us to eat and live.  So, over the weekend I saw all of the sports shows etc. and there were tons of drinks advertised on the TV.  Me personally, I never consume any of these drinks but I thought I might list some and share with you my thoughts.  So below is a list of the 10 unhealthiest bottled drinks that I saw.

  1. Cola’s-there is a wide variety here from Coca Cola to Pepsi Cola to 7 Up etc. I personally classify a cola as any of those sparkling drinks that we used drink as kids.  Cola’s have proven again and again to be unhealthy even the diet cola’s which contain all of the chemicals and fake sugar!
  2. Energy Drinks-many people rely on these because they provide caffeine. Basically all of these drinks are a lot of caffeine and a ton of sugar, so you can really get high on these types of drinks.  Not to mention the serious risk of decay and gum disease and connections to heart health, cancer and dementia.
  3. Mountain Dew-This is almost like a cola, but it is green and contains Yellow dye #5. There is some evidence that a large amount of this drink could cause cancer.  And of course, it is loaded with Sugar-Every dentists dream.
  4. Snapple-many people think of this as a health drink since tea is good for you. But, beware, as it has about 40 grams of Sugar per container.  American Heart Association says that we should not have more than 24 grams of sugar per day!  Did I mention the SUGAR?
  5. V-8 juice-as a kid, I drank this a lot because my parents wanted me to get all of my fruits and vegetables. Sounds good but it is deceiving.  The concentrated juices only make up about 2% of the content.  There are tons of other ingredients such canola oil, corn starch, cellulose gum and a ton of high fructose corn syrup (SUGAR by another name).  High fructose corn syrup is linked to an increased risk of fatty liver disease, diabetes, and other health issues.  Also, V-8 has a large amount of salt in it-like 640 mg.
  6. Welch’s Grape Juice-It is advertised as being made with 100% Concord grapes. So one glass of this has 44 grams of sugar in a 10 oz bottle and the National Health service children age 4-6 should not consume more than 19 grams of sugar per day!!  Went want children to consume fruit but I think it should be the natural fruit itself since this has lots of fiber and Grape juice does not.
  7. POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice-this is advertised as 100%. It also has a tart flavor which usually means there is a lot of acid.  The acid will erode the enamel off your teeth and the sugar causes cavities.  In my opinion, why drink this chemical man-made stuff when you can just buy the fruit?  Not to mention, there are 68 grams of sugar!
  8. Naked Juice Mighty Mango-With photos of fruit right on the label, you might assume this drink is healthy. Please read the labels.  The drink is completely devoid of fiber and contains 57 grams of sugar and 68 grams of carbohydrates, not to mention almost 300 calories.  No wonder our children are fatter than ever!
  9. Yoo-hoo- this is another children’s drink. It is packed with 220 calories and 47 grams of sugar not to mention all the carbs.  In my opinion, this goes straight to your belly and creates “DUNLOP’S DISEASE” -Your belly done lop over your belt!  In my opinion, you would be better off with just chocolate milk.
  10. Poppi-This is a popular prebiotic drink that prides itself on having very little sugar but it is good for the gut and our immune system. Apparently, Poppi is being sued for misleading its customers.  The lawsuit claims there are very small amounts of prebiotics in each can. In fact the amounts are so minute that they cannot provide the health benefits that they claim.  Some nutritionists claim that the drink could actually be causing distress to you digestive tract.  In my opinion, it is better to get your prebiotics from things like asparagus and avocado.

As a dentist I’m always concerned about Dental health. Bad bacteria (Staph and Strep) love sugar, so the more sugar you consume, the more bad bacteria will thrive and grow in your mouth — this leads to bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease and lots of other health issues. Consuming that much sugar can raise your blood pressure, lead to heart disease, increase risk of diabetes, cause weight gain, dementia and possibly even cancer!

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, lets visit our physician for that annual checkup!  What do you think?  I also think it is so important to follow healthy eating.  Of course, i love a Paleo lifstyle/diet as it does not allow any of this junk
