I have been following RFK lately just to see what he is really going to do.  One of his biggest concerns revolve around processed foods and I have come across some interesting studies and info from reliable sources such as Harvard Medical school.  One of my biggest concerns along with his is called UPF’s which are Ultra Processed Foods.  What are they and why are experts so concerned about them.  If you have time just Google Ultra-Processed Foods, but I will give you a brief synopsis of my findings.

What are UPF’s?  They are everywhere and many studies have linked them to major systemic diseases such as Dementia, Heart attacks, strokes, cancer, Type 2 diabetes etc.  From a dentist standpoint, almost every Ultra Processed Food has SUGAR in it and of course this can lead to cavities and gum disease which are also linked to the other diseases.  So, a good definition of UPF’s –

Ultra-processed foods are processed foods that add ingredients like artificial colors and flavors, preservatives for shelf stability, and ingredients to preserve texture.  Officially, there must be at least 5 ingredients to be a UPF.  Processed foods have less than 5 ingredients.  Of course, SUGAR is the one that I’m most concerned with.  In other words, they don’t want their food to spoil while it is being shipped all over the world and can sit on store shelves sometimes for months.  Example-If you took a piece of fish or a vegetable etc. and put it in a can-how long could it sit there before it spoiled?  So, manufacturers add all of these chemicals to the food to make it last a long time on the shelf waiting for you to buy it.  Many countries around the world have banned many of these chemicals (I read somewhere that there are about 15,000 chemical options) because they think, or they have research that these additives can damage our health.  RFK believes that many of these chemicals are responsible for childhood obesity and a 40% increase in childhood diabetes and autism etc..  There is something causing this horrendous increase in all of these health issues.  Some of them have been researched and seem to be ok but in my mind, I just want good healthy fresh food and not a bunch of chemicals.  I cannot envision how any of that can be healthy for you and in most cases UPF’s are horrible for your dental health.  In 1950 diabetes involved less than 1% of our population.  In 2020 it’s more like 12-15% of the population and a lot of that is our children.  In general diabetes can reduce your lifespan by about 10 years but even if not it can create some horrible side effects like amputations and daily injections of insulin etc..  So maybe UPF’s don’t cause this much misery but they sure can cause lots of cavities and gum disease.  Doesn’t it just make sense to just eat clean healthy fresh food instead of chemicals and processes???  Below is a list of just a few processed foods to avoid.  RFK really wants to limit these foods in our children’s schools.  I would love it if parents didn’t buy this junk for their kids as they grow up addicted to it and can’t quit.  What do you think?

  • Candy
  • Soft drinks and soda’s
  • Energy drinks
  • Fruit juices
  • Frozen meals
  • Hot dogs
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Pancakes and waffles
  • Granola bars
  • Deli meats
  • Sausage and bacon
  • Salty snacks such as chips and crackers
  • Sauces in a jar such as mayonnaise and ketchup
  • Many low-fat milks and cheeses
  • Many dairy products such as yogurt, margarine and creamers
  • Ice Cream
  • Fast foods
  • Frozen dinners
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Lots of bread products

All of the above are loaded with SUGAR.  Many of my patients say I never eat sugar and then I ask them if they read the ingredients.  Of course they say NO!  Are you getting sick of me whining about SUGAR YET?  I’m sorry, but’s it’s killings us and our children and I feel it is my mission to let everyone know how bad it is for you.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE AVOID SUGAR AT ALL COSTS AND THAT INCLUDES ALMOST ALL PROCESSED FOODS!!!!!

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup.  Also, extremely important to get on track with your regular dental cleaning appointments.   PLEASE READ THE INGREDIENTS ON ANYTHING IN A CONTAINER TO AVOID SUGAR AND PROCESSED FOODS!    LET’S EAT HEALTHY.  REMEMBER, THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SAYS YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE MORE THAN 6 TEASPOONS OF SUGAR PER DAY.  I VOTE FOR 0!  I AM CONSIDERING A BOOT CAMP ON DENTAL HEALTH AND NUTRITION.  WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED?  PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
