Many people at this time are really worried about going to the dentist. Many people skip their normal cleaning
appointment regardless of whether there is a Pandemic or not. According to multiple sources adults between the
age of 20-75 have a CRAZY 93% form of some kind of decay and a whopping 83% of some form of gum
disease!! Did you know that gum disease is now considered a “Co Morbidity” for Covid-19? This is similar to
Diabetes and Heart disease. This means that if you have some form of gum disease you are more likely to have
severe complications from Covid-19 and more likely to end up on a ventilator and or die. The point being, that
now is not the time to skip your normal cleaning at your dentist.

Also, now is the time to be at your peak as far as all health is concerned. It is important to see your dentist and
dental hygienist to make sure that gums and teeth are at their best. It is also important now more than ever that
you focus on what you can do at home to avoid dental disease. This means that it is extremely important that you
floss, brush, rinse with mouthwash and eat really healthy to keep your immune system strong and to avoid any
co-morbidity! Let’s go over all of that. Here are 6 things you can do to improve your dental health and hopefully
avoid any complications if you get the virus.

FLOSSING-as we all know, we should floss after every meal but for me it is twice a day. And of course, eat no
SUGAR! Make sure when you floss, to go way under the gum. This is the mistake that most of my patients make
and this is where the bad bugs hide (under the gums). If your gums bleed when brushing or flossing, then you
have some form of gum disease and you need to get serious asap.

BRUSHING-We all know that we need to brush after every meal, but I think it is important to use a Sonic
Toothbrush. There are lots of good ones but my favorite is either an Oral B or a Sonicare. If you use a manual
toothbrush you can maybe get 100 strokes per minute, but with a sonic brush you can get up to 30,000 strokes
per minute. You should spend one minute on each side so that is about 60,000 strokes or about 5 years worth of
brushing in 2 minutes. Also the Sonic waves go way under the gums and this can really compliment you flossing.

EAT HEALTHY-As you know, I strongly believe in the Paleo diet. It has no sugar, no dairy and no grains. This is
very good for avoiding the dentist and a very non inflammatory diet. If fact being on this type of diet usually
improves your oral health dramatically and there is much less tartar buildup. Your hygienist will love you!!

MOUTHWASH-There has been lots of research that rinsing with a mouthwash (Listerine was used in the studies
that I looked at) can help prevent catching Covid-19 as the alcohol in Listerine can kill or inactivate the virus.

USE A TONGUE SCRAPER-many people skip this step but many bacteria and possibly the virus can hide in the
surface of your tongue. If you can scrape the tongue with a spoon or a tongue scraper (you can buy one at most
drug stores or online), you will be shocked at what you see come to the surface.

NO SMOKING-We all know that smoking is bad for your health but my experience with my patients is that all
smokers have some form of gum disease not to mention another co morbidity for Covid 19! STOP IT!

SUMMARY-In my opinion, if you just follow the simple 6 steps listed above, I think you will probably live an extra
10-20 years and you can hopefully avoid the virus or if you get it then you are less likely to end up in the hospital.
And, it is safe to go to the dentist so make sure you are not skipping your normal cleaning appointment. If you
don’t have one, then call your dentist today! It’s not that hard and you know that the mouth is the window to your
health!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

RANT AND RAVE-I am sick and tired of all of these lockdowns. I just read a study of 10 MILLION people that
proves that lockdowns do not work. Bottom line of the study said that lockdowns are UNNECESSARY as they do
not work! A better approach is to quarantine those people with symptoms and not the rest of us! In Harris county
Texas they keep talking about how much worse we are, but if you read their own health department records
online it shows that in July of 2020 we had about 48,261 active cases. As of yesterday January 6, 2021 we had
34,335 active cases (about 30% less!). Last flu season we had more death from annual flu than we have had so
far from Covid-19. Let’s get a grip and let’s really look at what science has to say before we lockdown any more!

STAY SAFE. WORRY ABOUT NOTHING AND PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING.
