I believe the mouth is the WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH.  I also believe that as individuals we need to take care of our health-nobody else is going to do it for us. I am chronically reading every article and every research I can find on health and diet.  I think I’m driving my wife crazy, but I just can’t quit, and I find it so interesting.  The latest study I found discusses that People who live Past 90 years old have key differences in their blood!

Recently people who live to 100 or beyond have become the fastest growing age group in the world.  Consequently, many researchers are looking for factors that can contribute to a long and healthy life.  In a recent study published in Gero-Science, researchers found some common biomarkers in people that were 90 or more.  This study was one of the largest ever conducted in this age group.  The date came from 44,000 Swedes that underwent health assessments from the age of 64-100+

The study found that 3 LOWER blood levels (called biomarkers) were commonly found in those over 100 that were not the same as those who died at an earlier age.  The outcome was that lower levels of BLOOD SUGAR, URIC ACID and CREATININE were linked to those that made it to 100 and above!  As most of you probably know, Blood Sugar (listed as fasting Blood Glucose or A1c (three-month average on your lab work from your doctor) is VERY MUCH related to how much sugar and processed carbs you are eating.  If you eat a lot of sugar and or processed carbs (all of the white things that we have been told not to eat such as bread/rice/pasta/flour/pastry etc.) then this causes your pancreas to release insulin.  Over time you become Insulin resistant or type 2 diabetic.  So, all of those people living past 90 have had low blood sugar for years meaning that they didn’t eat much sugar or processed carbs.  LOW Uric Acid is another Biomarker that 90+ individuals have.  Uric Acid is a waste product caused by digestion of certain foods.  High levels of uric acid can lead to several other health issues such as kidney stones and gout.  Creatinine is a chemical product left over from energy producing processes in your muscles.  Healthy kidneys filter creatinine out of the blood and it exits the body as a waste product.

The bottom line is that the study found lower levels of blood sugar, uric acid and creatinine in those people who made it to age 90 and up and especially in those age 100 and up.  This suggests that there are links between diet, nutrition, metabolic health, and exceptional longevity.  I would guess that all of us want to live to be a 100+ but for me it is only if I’m not being fed in bed and someone changing my diapers.  So, I am going to work on these 3 biomarkers.

One of the things that was NOT discussed very much in this study was cholesterol.  It was mentioned that those patients with the lowest cholesterol did not make it to the older ages.  One other study done in Japan found that hear some many different reports.  It is obvious that your body needs cholesterol, and all of your hormones and cells use cholesterol.  So why does it need to be so low?  The book we talked about last time (“THE CHOLESTEROL MYTH” by Dr. Stephen Sinatra) says that sugar in conjunction with High LDL cholesterol is the main cause of Heart Disease.  I guess we need more accurate and detailed study, but it seems pretty clear to me that we need to focus on NO SUGAR and NO PROCESSED CARBS no matter what!

If you would like more information on this subject, I highly recommend that you get Dr. Steven Sinatra’s book,

So here are some other hints to help you avoid SUGAR and processed foods (Almost all processed foods contain sugar!).

1.     Stay to the outer perimeter of the grocery store.  That is where the fresh vegetables, fruits and meats are located.  The inner part of the store is everything in a package/box or some kind of container.

2.    Always read the ingredients before you buy.  If it has anything with an “OSE” (All sugars end in “OSE” like fructose, glucose, dextrose etc.) or any big chemical words that you don’t know what they are-THEN DON’T BUY IT!  The other day I found Dextrose in Morton’s salt!  How can that be????

3.    Look for the expiration date-Fresh foods will not last for months on your shelf or in your refrigerator.  When it says, “USE BY DATE” and that date is months or years from now, that means that there are tons of chemicals and preservatives etc. in this container that will prevent the food from spoiling.  I don’t want to eat all those chemicals!  Many of them have been proven to cause or be linked to IBS, IBD, Crohn’s disease, bloating, diarrhea, gas etc.  Try leaving all processed foods out of your diet for just one month and you will be shocked how much better you will feel.

4.    When in doubt, the fewer ingredients the better.  Fresh foods won’t have a label, but everything packaged and processed will to extend their shelf life.

5.    Don’t let the words “ORGANIC OR NATURAL” fool you for ingredients in a container.

6.    I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT GETTING MY PATIENTS THAT ARE INTERESTED TO GO ON A SUGAR DETOX PLAN IN JANUARY (After the holidays).  Would you be interested?

SUMMARY-It is obvious that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we need to eliminate SUGAR and processed foods from our diet.   Sugar, along with lots of chemicals and additives are in almost anything in a container.  Please switch to fresh foods and unprocessed foods and in my opinion, avoid the fast-food restaurants as they are loaded to the gills with all kinds of chemicals, sugars and salts.  Remember, the American Heart Association recommends only 6 tsps. of SUGAR PER DAY!  And guess what, we all CHEAT once in a while, or least it is very difficult to avoid all processed foods and SUGAR.  Just do the best you can and learn to read the labels and avoid as much SUGAR AND PROCESSED FOOD as possible.
