I started drinking coffee when I was about 50 years old. Before that I felt that I didn’t need coffee and it upset my stomach, so I basically enjoyed it. But recently, I discovered that the older you get, you probably need coffee from a health standpoint, and I also read that we need more protein. So, I started a little research and decided why not mix coffee with some protein powder and I found that lots of people have been doing it and they call it “PROFFEE”.
There was not a standard recipe for proffee, so you can mix it any way you want. So, I set out on a mission to find what worked for me. I have tried a lot of combinations such as adding protein powder/protein drinks/collagen powders and tons of different coffee creamers. The problems that I ran into were many of these products have lots of sugar and of course sugar is super addictive and being a dentist, I don’t want any sugar!
One thing to keep in mind is how much protein should you be getting each day? The primary job of protein is to provide amino acids for building new tissues and healing older tissues. As we get older, we need protein to help us keep up. If you exercise your need for protein goes way up. I found a formula on the internet that said the average person needs to multiply their weight in pounds by .36 At the time I weighed close to 180 pounds x .36 says that I need to consume about 65 grams of protein per day. I asked my nutritionist (Jenna Nixon 281-433-9996) and she said because I work out (walk, hike, climb stairs, minor jog, go to the gym etc.) that I should be consuming about 100-125 grams of protein per day. So, lately I have made my target range 100+ grams per day and I start off in the morning with a PROFFEE!
Here is my PROFFEE recipe.
1. 8oz cup of my favorite java. The brand and flavor etc. varies all the time depending on my wife as she likes something new or different on a regular basis.
2. One scoop of Protein Powder SUGAR FREE. It is hard to find them sugar free, but my favorite so far is ORGAIN PROTEIN POWDER either chocolate or vanilla (Make sure it is Sugar free as they also make one with SUGAR!)
3. If this is not sweet enough you can add some sugar free milks or creamers
4. Also, you can add “MONK FRUIT” drops. They are 400% sweeter than sugar and there is no sugar as it is made from the plant. 3-4 drops is incredibly sweet.
5. Sometimes, instead of the protein powder I will add several splashes of a protein shake such as Adkins or Premier as they have little to no sugar and they make the coffee seem creamer almost like a chocolate malt.
So, by the time I finish doctoring up my coffee, I now have a chocolate malts flavored protein drink that will deliver between 10-30 grams of protein and off to work I go. I think you should try it as it seems very energizing and I’m usually not hungry until the afternoon. Good luck and let me know what works for you.
A Quick Review
Protein is a great way to start your day and I think adding a scoop of powder or a splash of protein drink to your coffee is a huge PLUS! Consider the following guidelines. Aim for an ideal amount of total protein (rather than an excessive amount)
• Aim for the right amount of protein for your age and physical activity
• Balance your diet and avoid sugar
• Monitor how you feel and enjoy with friends
• Also consider other protein options such as eggs, yogurt, fruit and nuts
SUMMARY-IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT YOUR MOUTH IS THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH. IN MY OPINION, AS WE GET OLDER, WE NEED MORE PROTEIN AND MORE COFFEE (NOT TO EXCEED 4 CUPS PER DAY). WHY NOT MIX THEM TOGETHER? BE SURE TO CUT OUT THE SUGAR AS WE DON’T WANT TO INCREASE THE GRAMS (AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SAYS NO MORE THAN 6 TSPS/DAY!)
