It seems like every time I start reading health articles there is something about the bacteria of the mouth being linked to so many different diseases. It seems obvious to me that the Standard American Diet (SAD) is feeding and cultivating all of these bad bacteria, germs, virus’s, fungi etc. and then we swallow them or breathe them and suddenly we are sick. I feel very comfortable that SAD (which always contains a lot of SUGAR) is responsible for many of the health issues we see regularly in our society. A recent study from NYU Langone found that the microbes living in our mouths are linked to pancreatic cancer! They actually found 27 different species of microbes that were associated with a 3.5 increased change of developing this cancer.
The most notable finding was that several gum disease bacteria were linked to a much higher risk, while the good bacteria in our mouth appeared to lower the risk. They also noted that fungi call Candida were also implicated. So just like everything else we have been discussing in our newsletter, you don’t want to feed to bad germs (and they love SUGAR), BUT instead you want to feed the good germs. This isn’t the first time this has happened. Past research indicates that the bad bacteria in our mouths, like Staph and Strep are linked to many other conditions such as heart attack, stroke, dementia, diabetes etc.
It is obvious that the name of the game is “DON’T FEED THE BAD GUYS!” If you feed them they will grow and multiply and you will swallow them breathe them and they can even enter the bloodstream through the gums. Once into the blood stream they can travel throughout the body and something somewhere will happen.
THE bottom line is that taking care of your mouth is not just about preventing cavities and gum disease, but a healthy oral environment will probably protect against risk for other serious health conditions. DON’T FEED THE BAD BUGS!!
As you know, we recommend the following:
- Brush after every meal- if you don’t brush then small particles of food stay in the mouth feeding all the germs. If you can’t brush at least rinse your mouth out with water.
- We also recommend brushing with a sonic toothbrush. Using a regular manual toothbrush you can maybe do 100 strokes per minute. With a sonic toothbrush it will increase to 30,000-45,000 strokes per minute!! There are 3 brands that we love- Sonicare, Oral B and the new light powered Oralucent Light Brush.
- You also have to floss-it is not an option. Toothbrushes cannot get in between the teeth and floss is the best way to do that.
- We strongly believe in the Paleo diet because it does not allow sugar and grains (like Bread and crackers and chips) and white carbs (like pasta, rice and starchy foods). These types of foods break down into sugar so basically it is almost as bad as sugar. There are other diets that are good such Mediterranean, Whole 30, Dash etc.
- Get your teeth cleaned regularly at our office. No one is perfect and because of that the bad bacteria cause you to build up a lot of bad tartar and plaque and this will lead to the gum disease.
SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup. If you are eating the Standard American Diet, then you asking to get sick and suffer. Please don’t do it.
