I believe the mouth is the WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH. I also believe that as individuals we need to take care of our health-nobody else is going to do it for us. Part of what I do for my oral health is that I follow the Paleo Diet. Most people have heard of this diet, but they are not sure what it is. The term Paleo refers to cavemen living in the Paleolithic age some 46,000 years ago. The main point of the diet is that cavemen ate what they could kill or find growing in the woods. They are often referred to as hunters and gathers. Several interesting facts come to light when you study cavemen. First of all, in my opinion, they ate a much healthier diet than you and I do. They had no chemicals, no preservatives, and no sugar in their diet. Everything was fresh. That is why the diet has become so popular as all the food they consumed was natural and of course, there was no sugar other than occasional honey that they could find. Because of their diet they basically never had cavities or gum disease. There has also been no evidence of cancer or other diseases. How can that be, and they didn’t even own a toothbrush!!!

So, let’s go over the difference between a caveman diet and today’s Standard American Diet (called SAD).

CAVEMAN DIET

Beef:-Wild caught-animals lived off of the grass no hormones, chemicals, or antibiotics ever

Fish– Wild Caught, ate bugs with no chemicals ever

Fruits– seasonal were a luxury and only in some areas

Vegetables– seasonal and only in some areas

Dairy– none available-they had no cheese, milk, or butter

Grains-very little available

Eggs nuts and seeds-when available

SAD (STANDARD AMERICA DIET)

Beef-raised in a feedlot, fed corn, hormones to grow faster and bigger, given antibiotics to prevent

Chicken– raised in a cage, fed corn, antibiotics, hormones Fertilizers, and preservatives. If packaged, they have tons of sugar added and other chemicals. Eat organic only!

Vegetables– same as fruits-eat organic only.

Dairy– tons of cheese milk and dairy available. Much of it contains sugar, hormones, antibiotics including other chemicals and preservatives.

Grains– Bread, crackers, tortilla’s, chips, pasta

Eggs nuts and seeds-Eggs come from chickens raised in cages, nuts, and seeds can be modified genetically. Eat these if organic

If you are going to follow the Paleo diet only eat wild proteins, organic fruits and vegetables, no grains, and no dairy. You can cheat a little on dairy by using KERRYGOLD Products since they come from pasture-raised grass-fed cattle. Use only Olive oil or Avocado oil. Your plate should be about 1/4 plate of protein and 3/4 plate of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Try not to eat anything from a package or container. The Paleo diet helps to prevent cavities and gum disease (NO SUGAR ALLOWED). It also improves your immune system, reduces inflammation, supports hormone regulation, foundation for healthy digestion, weight normalization, and is very anti-inflammatory. Standard America Diet-on the other hand, the STANDARD AMERICAN DIET (SAD), causes cavities and gum disease, inflames the digestive tract, difficult to digest, stimulates inflammation, has many chemical additives, and preservatives that are very inflammatory, and provides poor nutrition. It is also well documented that SAD is Linked to Diabetes, Cancer, Heart Disease, Stroke, and Dementia! So, I believe when it comes to taking care of your oral health and your systemic health that the PALEO DIET is one of the better choices around. In my case, after being on the PALEO DIET for about 2 months, it had eliminated or drastically reduced the following conditions

  1. Chest Pain-I thought I was having a heart attack, but it was my diet!
  2. Arthritis-I still have it, but it is much better and continues to improve.
  3. Nasal Allergies-drastically better. Many of my issues were related to dairy products.
  4. Sinus infections-I used to get them every spring and haven’t had one in several years.
  5. Indigestion and heartburn-as long as I don’t cheat (I cheated a lot during the holidays and suffered for it), this is not an issue. Before Paleo, it was getting to be serious.
  6. High Cholesterol- mine has dropped about 80-100 points.
  7. Bladder infections-I used to get about 2-3 per year and they are now gone.
  8. Beginning diverticulitis-I had some small polyps removed and now all is well.
  9. BPH-enlarged prostate is pretty much gone, and I have been able to get off of the medication I was taking.
  10. Poor sleep- I used to get up 4-5 times per night and now it is one or none.
  11. Bloated feeling- as long as I don’t cheat, this is great.
  12. I lost about 20 pounds and it is basically stable. When I cheat, it goes up.
  13. Lack of Energy-I used to struggle to get up in the morning even though I have always been an early riser. Now I’m ready to go about 5:00 to 5:30 a.m. and need less coffee if any.
  14. So far, extremely resistant to the Covid-strong immune system.

SUMMARY-So, when it comes to taking care of my oral health and my systemic health, I believe that the PALEO DIET is a great foundation and has helped me a lot. I also still believe in exercising at least 150 minutes per week and getting 8 hours of quality sleep per night

RANT AND RAVE– I don’t know about you, but I am sick and tired of this virus. I don’t know what to do or what not to do and it seems like no matter what, we are all going to get it??? Maybe not? I pray this thing will go away pretty soon and by summer we are mostly normal.
