You know how it is. Every time you go to the dentist, they give some kind of advice of what to do to improve the health of your mouth. It is easy to take dental health for granted until there is a problem. Most dental problems show very few signs until all of sudden there is a big problem. Kind of like high blood pressure-you don’t know you have it until you have a heart attack or die. I decided to put all of that advice into a simple cookbook that is pretty easy to follow. If you follow this, you will eliminate or avoid most problems.
1. Don’t forget that sugar is a really big problem. It causes tooth decay and gum disease and eventually you will lose your teeth. Add to that the numerous starchy carbs that we all consume like bread, chips, pasta, rice and crackers. All of these carbs break down into sugar very rapidly in the mouth and that is why dentists always recommend brushing after every meal. Not only that but sugar is linked to about 40 other systemic health issues such as heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, dementia etc. It is poison in all respects, and we strongly recommend that you avoid it as much as possible. That’s why I like the Paleo diet because no sugar allowed.
2. Cut down on your snacks. Just a little bit of sugar or starchy carbs can go a long way. For example-you will have less decay if you just gobble down the candy bar all at once, rather than taking small bites over an extended period of time. Every time you take a snack, you are feeding the bad bacteria in your mouth, and it is those bad bacteria that cause all the problems. The name of the game is NOT TO FEED THEM, BUT ASSUMING YOU DO THEN YOU NEED TO REMOVE THEM.
3. Don’t forget to use your Sonic toothbrush. These produce about 32,000 strokes per minute, and you only get about 100 strokes per minute with a manual toothbrush. Try it, I dare you! YOU MUST SPEND AT LEAST 2 MINUTES BRUSHING!
4. Floss at least twice a day. The toothbrush never gets in between the teeth but the food and sugar and starchy carbs do it almost every time you eat. This is non-negotiable. Dr. Charles Mayo said preventive dentistry will add about 10 years to your life!
5. Brush your tongue. Although it is not essential, brushing your tongue kills or removes a lot of bacteria that can cause bad breath or move from the tongue to the gums.
6. Brush your gums-do not use a hard or medium brush for this but the gums need stimulation and massage. I use my Sonic toothbrush on the outside and inside down at the gums. It really helps prevent problems.
7. Get a checkup for your kids at about age 2 and establish a good routine. Let them see you floss and brush and then they want to do the same thing. Establishing this kind of simple routine will save everyone lots of money and lots of grief.
8. Manage your stress. High stress leads to grinding your teeth which can break them or cause the gums to recede. Also, stress releases hormones that will affect your immune system and you become more susceptible to all kinds of health problems including dental.
9. Get high tech apps on your phone to help you with how much sugar you are consuming or how long did you brush your teeth. Oral B has one linked to their sonic toothbrush and there are tons of apps available such as LOSE IT that will tell you how much sugar is in the food you are about to eat.
10. Don’t put off your dental care such as cleanings and fillings etc. Cleanings help us to find problems when they are small. The longer you put them off the bigger and more expensive they become. I can’t tell you how many times people put off taking care of a filling and then 6 months or a year later they need a root canal or an extraction etc. PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME A lot more later!
SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup. Also, extremely important to get on track with your regular dental cleaning appointments. PLEASE READ THE INGREDIENTS ON ANYTHING IN A CONTAINER TO AVOID SUGAR AND PROCESSED FOODS! LET’S EAT HEALTHY. REMEMBER, THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SAYS YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE MORE THAN 6 TEASPOONS OF SUGAR PER DAY. I VOTE FOR 0! I AM CONSIDERING A BOOT CAMP ON DENTAL HEALTH AND NUTRITION. WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED? PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
