Everyday I get a patient that comes in with decay in their teeth.  It is very disheartening  because I know for sure that it can be prevented.  I know because I have not had a cavity for over 70 years, and almost all of my kids and grandkids have not had any cavities!  It is not easy to do but it’s also not that hard.  In America, the average kid by age 5 already has 5 cavities and it is.  All the research shows the we Americans are eating a massive amount of sugar everyday and most Americans do NOT BRUSH AND FLOSS LIKE THEY SHOULD!!

Recently the American Heart Association issued a scientific advisory warning against consuming ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS (called UPF’s).  Officials said that these products have links to serious Health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, type II diabetes, dementia and obesity.  The advisory emphasizes this danger because UPF’s are extremely high in SUGAR, SALT, AND FAT!  UPF’s are loaded with sugar!

I think that the mouth really is the window to your health.  So, sit down for dinner tonight and read every label of every food you eat (goes through the mouth) and count how many grams of sugar you are eating.  From a heart standpoint AHA says you should never eat more than 4gms of sugar per day.  My experience says that the average American eats 50-100 grams per day!!!

SO, what are UPF’s?  It is probably easier to say, what is not a UPF.  In my opinion about 70% of anything in a container such as a jar, can package, box is a UPF.  Listed below are some of my favorites

Sodas or sugary drinks

Breakfast cereals

Candy bars and protein bars

Frozen pizza

Microwave popcorn that is butter flavor

Donuts

Packaged Snack Cakes and cookies

Processed Meats like hot dogs, chicken nuggets and lunch meats

Instant noodles

Many mass-produced breads

In my opinion you need to read every label of anything in a package.  If in contains sugar (anything ending in an “OSE” like sucrose, fructose, dextrose is a sugar) and lots of ingredients that you can’t pronounce (like carrageenan is a soap) then don’t buy it.  I found Morton’s Sea salt with sugar (Dextrose) listed as the second ingredient.  In my opinion the FOOD INDUSTRY is killing us, and we need to get back to eating healthy foods.  And don’t fall for restaurant foods.  One article I read said that only about 2% of restaurant foods are healthy.  The rest are loaded with SUGAR AND SALT ETC..  No wonder we are all getting cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.  Let’s make America Healthy Again.

So, I want to break it down to really simple basic issues.

  1. Your mouth has almost 1 trillion germs in it and some of them are really bad like Strep and Staph. Don’t feed the germs.  They love sugar!
  2. Because everything has sugar in it, you need to try to eat everything fresh rather than from a package. We all cheat some so now if you feed the germs then you MUST FLOSS AND BRUSH to remove them!
  3. FLOSS OR DIE-if you don’t floss (and brush), you will get gums infections and cavities. Gum infections lead to disease such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, dementia, cancer etc.  It’s not an option!

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup. PLEASE READ THE INGREDIENTS ON ANYTHING IN A CONTAINER TO AVOID SUGAR AND ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS!    LET’S EAT HEALTHY.  REMEMBER, THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SAYS YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE MORE THAN 4 GRAMS (6 TEASPOONS) OF SUGAR PER DAY.  I VOTE FOR 0!
