You are probably getting sick of hearing it, but more and more studies are linking the bacteria in your mouth and gum disease to multiple other health conditions.  It is obvious that those really bad bacteria in your mouth (mainly Staff and Strep) are linked to lots of other health conditions.  It is my opinion that you  should not feed those bacteria and as you know they love SUGAR and starchy carbohydrates such as bread, rice, pasta etc. and also remove and or kill those bad bacteria.

A 21-year study from the University of South Carolina restricted their study to only individuals with gum disease and decay.  They found these patients had about twice the risk of stroke when compared to individuals with good oral health even after controlling for cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking and obesity.  Multiple studies have now shown that inflammation and bacteria from the mouth can spread to other areas of the body increasing the likelihood of clots.

Overall, people with both gum disease and cavities had a 36% higher risk of major cardiovascular events including strokes, fatal heart attacks and overall heart disease.   It is obvious that having a healthy mouth is crucial to avoiding strokes and heart disease.  This confirms the benefits of regular flossing, brushing and dental checkups!

Another study out of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine discovered that people with gum disease have a 3 times higher risk of developing diabetes.  Early symptoms of gum disease include swollen, red and bleeding gums with persistent bad breath, gum tenderness, receding gum lines and or loose teeth.  Most of these early signs are painless and should be examined by a dentist.

I find it very interesting that most physicians have no idea of what gum disease looks like and of course they don’t know how to screen for it.  Make sure to visit your dentist for a regular exam as your physician typically won’t do it.

So, let’s talk about how you can prevent gum disease and decay.  There are 4 main ways to do this-

  1. Do not feed the bad bacteria that are living in your mouth. That means you should not eat more than 4 tsps. of SUGAR PER DAY!  In many cases the sugar is listed on the ingredients label in almost anything in a container. It is often listed as grams.  4 tsps. of sugar converts to 24 grams.  READ THE LABELS and cut out sugar.
  2. Eat Oral probiotics daily. Just like we need probiotics in our stomach, we also need them in our mouth.  In fact, there are some studies about swallowing the bad bacteria in your mouth can possibly mess up the bacteria in your stomach and intestines.  Oral pro and prebiotics are a healthy way to build the good bacteria in your mouth
  3. Floss daily. Everyone knows to floss but most of us do not do it often enough or well enough.  Basically, every time you eat, food gets in between your teeth.  The food feeds the bacteria.  When you floss, you need to make sure that you go WAY UNDER THE GUMS AS THIS IS WHERE THE BACTERIA are hiding.  You should floss after every meal but especially after eating Sugar and starchy carbohydrates.
  4. Brush after every meal. No matter what, food collects around your teeth and in the grooves of teeth.  You must remove these food particles to prevent feeding the bacteria and thus causing decay and gum disease.  One of the latest and greatest toothbrushes ever recently arrived on the market.  It is called Oralucent (oralucent.com).  It does about 50% more strokes per minute (about 45,000) than the competitors, it is lighter and holds a charge for several weeks.  In addition, it provides red and blue light therapy.  The red light helps to prevent or reduce inflammation, and the blue light kills bacteria.  See below for a discounted price.

SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.  In my opinion, we should all focus on our health every day and that includes brushing, flossing, dental cleanings and while we are at it, let’s visit our physician for that annual checkup.  If you are eating the Standard American Diet, then you asking to get sick and suffer as in Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, gum disease and decay.  Please aim to be healthier starting now before the holidays..
