The main reason that dentists avoid sugar and hate it is because they see all of the damage that SUGAR causes as in cavities and gum disease. In addition to CAVE MAN (Hence the word PALEO) even the ancient Romans had little or no decay or gum disease. This has been heavily researched in the bodies found at Pompei Italy. Isn’t that amazing? It is because they had little or no sugar and also very low or no carbohydrates. They especially had no refined carbohydrates as we do today. Everything they ate was made fresh daily and pretty much eaten on the spot.
In today’s world, there are a lot more foods that cause cavities and gum disease. Interestingly enough, those same foods cause us to build body fat. Carrying too much of this type of fat is unattractive to most people, but it will also increase your risk of later developing a heart attack or stroke. If we could avoid these foods, it would improve our oral health but also would help us to avoid a heart attack or stroke. Sounds like a good plan to me.
I get patients all the time that tell me they don’t eat much sugar, but if I get them to fill out a food diary, it is very easy to see why they are also have so many cavities and gum infections. I challenge to create your own food diary and put down everything that goes in your mouth for a week. If you are the average American you will see (by reading the labels of what you ate or drank) that you probably consumed almost 4 pounds of sugar that week!!
So, in addition to all of the sugar you just consumed, what am I referring to that also causes cavities, gum disease, heart attack and stroke? It is well proven that refined carbohydrates can do the same thing. What are refined carbohydrates. These foods include carbohydrates such as white bread, cookies, crackers, chips, breakfast cereals, pasta, pizza and white rice. That is just a small list. All of these foods taste great but should be avoided at all costs because of the damage your overall health, oral health and waistline.
SUMMARY-In my opinion, we should do everything possible to avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates in our diet. We will be healthier and live longer! Did you know that an estimated 90% of all Americans have at least one or more cavities. Also, American children age 5 already have 5 fillings!!!

RANT AND RAVE-I am sick and tired of people eating so much junk. I just read that the most common age related problem after turning 60 is dental disease. It is so sad to see patients 60 and up come in with cavities and they usually don’t have insurance and they don’t need that expense. So then they avoid the dentist and the conditions get worse and then they have to have .their teeth pulled. Now the expenses really start to add up In my old age I want to enjoy life and avoid expensive treatment. It appears to me that a lot of that could be avoided with simple diet changes-AVOID SUGAR AND REFINED CARBOHYDRATES
