I had a patient ask me the other day if I took collagen. I do not but she said that she did because she was very concerned about her aging wrinkled skin. Then she asked me if sugar caused wrinkles and I did not have the answer. So, I Googled it and found several interesting articles.
When it comes to skin care, I don’t normally consider sugar to be an issue. Many articles claim that your diet can affect your skin, and I remember when I was a kid that if you had a lot of pimples, we were told that we were eating too much sugar. Then in dental school our nutrition courses indicated the same thing. Well in today’s world it all comes to light.
So, after diving into research to see how sugar influences premature aging of skin, we found out that YES, SUGAR CAN INDIRECTLY CAUSE WRINKLES. The truth is that sugar does break down collagen. In fact, sugar along with processed foods can really be bad news for collagen. This works because foods containing sugar are pro-inflammatory which will activate your immune system and promote inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation hurts collagen in 2 ways. By inhibiting collagen production and by breaking down existing collagen. In fact, sugar links the amino acids present in collagen and elastin and renders them incapable of skin repair which means we get more wrinkles. So, the bottom line is that sugar can cause wrinkles.
There are a few things we can do to help.
- Minimize sugar consumption. From a dental standpoint eliminate sugar. Assuming we all cheat then there are some foods and supplements to consider.
- Consumption of Vitamin C which means eating more citrus and take Vitamin C supplements.
- Consume more nuts because they contain zinc which is essential for collagen production.
- Eat more eggs because egg whites contain a lot of glycine and proline amino acids which make up collagen.
- Take collagen supplements.
There’s no universal eating scheme that will work for everyone, especially when it comes to skin health. But avoiding sugar and processed foods help ensure you are getting a broad spectrum of nutrients that the skin needs to function.
SUMMARY-It is obvious to ME that your mouth is the window to your health.
