We have all heard that eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Since I changed to eating PALEO 4 years ago, I have become a big believer in that old philosophy. The way I feel and the results of all my physical exams have dramatically improved.

Recently I read a new study that claims that about 30% of COVID cases could be avoided if people ate a healthy diet. The study was published in the journal Gut. It reports that eating a healthy diet may lower the risk of contracting COVID and in addition, it may lower the severity of symptoms if you get infected. The researchers also noted that there was a cumulative link between socioeconomic levels, poor nutrition, and overall COVID risk. In conclusion, the researchers believe that a healthy diet may help end the pandemic. OF COURSE, EATING PALEO MEANS NO SUGAR and I think the PALEO diet is one of the healthiest diets around. I am convinced that sugar is a major culprit in lots of health conditions in addition to creating cavities and gum disease.

After reading the study it made me think-I wonder if sugar intake could have anything to do with why some people get much sicker than others? You probably know that Obesity, diabetes, and heart problems are considered comorbidities. Several months ago, they classified Gum disease as comorbidity and now the American Heart Association wants you to limit your sugar intake. I also had a friend that was a SUGARHOLIC, and he had gum disease and he died after getting Covid. So, in my opinion, I think sugar intake may play a role. What do you think?

I have a great idea let’s join forces and go on a sugar detox. Since sugar is in about 80% of all packaged food items, it gets a little difficult if you like all the food that comes in cans and packages. Instead, you must buy everything fresh such as fruits, vegetables along with wild-caught fish, grass-fed meat, and free-range poultry. Basically, that is the PALEO DIET. If you throw in whole grain pasta and bread, then you are Mediterranean diet. By the way, there is no sugar in the PALEO DIET ALLOWED. I suggest that you give this a try. If you avoid getting COVID then I feel like I have done a good job.

So, what do you think a sugar detox would look like? I have my idea and I will share it with you, but I would be interested to see what you think. In my opinion, most of America is the grips of a SUGAR ADDICTION. This is evidenced by the fact that most Americans consume on average over one-half a pound of sugar per day! While some people joke and refer to themselves as sugar addicts, the reality is that it is not a laughing matter.
Basically, a sugar detox means that you cut all sugar from your diet for a period of time. That means no white sugar, no honey, no agave, no alcohol, no sweeteners of any kind including artificial, no dextrose, no fructose (anything that ends in an “OSE” is usually a sugar such as maltose, sucrose, lactose, glucose), no corn syrup, no candy, no ice cream, and no alcohol. The scary part is that about 80% of anything in a package or a can has sugar in it. You need to read the labels. I found out that some MORTON’S salt has sugar in it (See the photo at the end). If I hadn’t read the label I would not have known. Also, watch out for condiments (ketchup is loaded with sugar), tomato paste, salad dressings, and fruit drinks. While avoiding sugar we also need to avoid refined carbohydrates as they break down into sugar. This would include things like white bread, bagels, cereal, pasta, and crackers.
In general, it takes about a month to see all of the benefits so since my next physical is in a month-HERE GOES FOR ME.

SUMMARY-one of the best things that you could ever do for yourself is to eliminate sugar from your diet. In the short run, I think it makes sense to go on a sugar detox and see how well you feel. It will surely help your dental health and hopefully, it helps everything else. And guess what? About the time we finish with the Sugar Detox, it will be the holiday season and we can reward ourselves for a job well done. Hopefully, we don’t overdo it!

RANT AND RAVE-I get so mad at all the companies that put sugar into their packaged products. The other day at the grocery store, I picked up a nice container of Morton’s salt and read the back label. Guess what, there was sugar listed in the ingredients. Of course, they tried to hide the sugar and they called it Dextrose. I actually called the company to complain but they said they used sugar to help prevent clumping. YEAH, RIGHT!
