For years now we have been complaining about SUGAR and how it is linked to 45 other medical conditions such as Heart Attacks, strokes, Cancer, Dementia, Type II Diabetes. Well recently, research is indicating that some of the artificial sweeteners are linked to Heart attacks and strokes! Recent studies shed light on Aspartame and Sucralose have growing evidence that they may increase heart attacks and strokes.
In my opinion we should avoid all artificial sweeteners. To be honest I’m not sure what Aspartame is but I have one patient that was having chest pains and his doctor took him off of all artificial sweeteners including Aspartame. And his chest pain went away within a few days.
Sucralose is different in that it is classified as a sugar alcohol. There are many versions of these alcohols such as Xylitol and Sorbitol. Pretty much anything listed as a sweetener that ends in “TOL” is a sugar alcohol.
In order to protect our health we need to make some informed decisions. For me, I recommend that you avoid anything that is an artificial sweetener and I also recommend that you avoid SUGAR. So, what do we do when we need something sweet?
I have several choices to think about
1. Avoidance is the best.
2. Read the labels carefully and find something more natural
3. My favorite choice is Raw Unfiltered Honey. I put this on pancakes or in my coffee. It is not as sweet, but I have gotten used to it.
4. Other natural sweeteners include agave syrup and fruit. I love to put blueberries in my pancakes and then add the honey
5. Monk Fruit is a derivative a plant and you can get it in drops or powdered. It is much sweeter than sugar, so you don’t need much.
6. Stevia also is a derivative of a plant and it works pretty well.
In the ever-evolving discussion of science vs sweetness it has become a real battle. The American Heart association says to limit sugar to 6 tsps. Per day. That is about 24 grams. Most people are consuming around 100 grams per day or more. The average American consumes about 200 pounds of SUGAR PER YEAR! To live longer and healthier please try to cut out as much as you can.
SUMMARY-IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT YOUR MOUTH IS THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH. IN MY OPINION, ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS ARE KILLING US AND IT IS GROWING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS. WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE BUT I DON’T WANT IT TO BE A SLOW AND PAINFUL DEATH LIKE STROKE, DIABETES, DEMENTIA, CANCER ETC. WOULD YOU AGREE?
