I recently went in for a follow-up PET scan with my cardiologist. He is really the reason that I decided to go on the PALEO DIET 3 years ago. If you don’t know my story, here is a brief review. I was having chest pains and thought it was a heart attack. I went to a cardiologist, and he told me he thought it was my diet. I have always eaten what I thought was a good diet, so I didn’t buy into it. I went to a gastroenterologist, and he put a camera down my throat and said yes-you have inflamed intestines, which is what is causing your chest pain. He instructed me to follow a diet of no coffee and no alcohol and limit my fat intake. I followed this for 30 days and it didn’t help. So, I decided to go to another cardiologist (Dr. Lance Gould who took over for Dr. DeBakey and also invented the PET SCAN) to get a second opinion. Dr. Gould ran many tests including his latest version of the PET SCAN and got the same results-IT WAS NOT MY HEART! YEAH! So, if not my heart what was it?? I researched and discovered other people with similar issues, and they solved it with the PALEO DIET. I found a dentist who had written a book on the subject called “CRAZY GOOD LIVING” by Dr. Al Danenberg. So, I bought the book, and I was well in 3 days-chest pains gone, heartburn gone, etc, and over the next 30 days my life changed dramatically, and I am so much healthier and feel so much better now.
Since it had been 3 years since my last PET SCAN, I contacted Dr. Gould about a follow-up PET SCAN. After a long phone consultation, he commented that it sounded like I was doing really well, and he was impressed with my progress. In fact, he invited me to be in a study tracking me to see how long I live. While I was there, I was asked by one of his nurses about what she thought was the secret to a long healthy life. I commented off course that I blamed most of my good fortune on the Paleo Diet. However, Dr. Gould was not on the Paleo Diet so what was the difference? WHAT IS THE SECRET FOR NEVER GETTING OLD, OR THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH? I set out on a mission to see what the secret was. OF COURSE, THERE IS NO FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH BUT THERE ARE SOME SECRETS TO LIVING A LONG HEALTHY LIFE!
I found that there are many secrets to good health and when you combine them you will have the best chance for living a long healthy life-I’m calling that the Fountain of Youth. So, here you go with SPIKER’S SECRETS TO THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH.
- According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a diet containing lots of sugar and or refined carbohydrates will ACCELERATE AGING. SUGAR is a sworn enemy to your waistline, but it is also another serious enemy of youthful-looking skin, i.e., wrinkles. The net result is dull, sagging skin and wrinkles all coming from SUGAR AND REFINED CARBOHYDRATES!
- A study from the University of California at San Francisco found that people who consumed more sugar had shorter telomeres. Telomeres are the part of your cells that hold the DNA TOGETHER. They shorten as you get old, but sugar causes them to shorten much faster which means you age much faster. Also, people with shorter telomeres are at a much greater risk of serious diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Avoiding sugar and substituting the Paleo Diet (no sugar allowed) will greatly reduce your risk of age-related illnesses like dementia, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
- The next big key to the fountain of youth or anti-aging is to QUIT SMOKING! We all know it is bad but one of the things that most people miss is that smoking in general causes gum disease and gum disease can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer which can all shorten your life!! Quit and add 10 years to life!!
- Dr. Charles Mayo said, “preventive dentistry can add 10 years to your life”! What is preventive dentistry? This includes but is not limited to the following. Most important is flossing under the gums because that is where the bacteria all hide. Next is brushing after every meal but especially after eating any sugar. I strongly recommend a Sonic toothbrush as it will do about 5 years’ worth of brushing in 2 minutes. Also include a mouthwash like Listerine, a tongue scraper, and perhaps floss picks. There are lots of other devices and techniques so please consult your dentist for what is best for you and your mouth. And please call your dentist now for a checkup and cleaning.
SUMMARY-There is no FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH. However, there are several things we can all do to improve the quality of our life as well as increase our lifespan. The above-mentioned secrets are my favorite, but I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention exercise. Dr. Ken Cooper of the Cooper Clinic in Dallas Texas has about 50 years of research that indicates we all need about 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week. I personally enjoy walking 30-40 minutes twice a week with my wife, going to the gym twice a week, and getting on a treadmill for 45 minutes to an hour twice a week.
RANT AND RAVE- I am continuously shocked with how much sugar and junk people eat on a daily basis. I recently went out to eat with some friends in Galveston Texas. I was blown away by the junk they ate. According to my rough calculations the 13-year-old daughter consumed at least 25 grams of sugar at lunch. She had a Gatorade, a sandwich, Mac and Cheese, and a dessert. No wonder she was already a little overweight. Then along comes dad who is a diabetic and overweight. He consumed about 50 grams of sugar etc. No wonder he was diabetic and very overweight. It seems to me that people just ignore what they should eat, and I guess they assume some kind of pill will just fix all their ailments and it is open season on any food they want. Quit THAT and GO PALEO!!
