I believe the mouth is the WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH. I also believe that as individuals we need to take care of our health, BE THE CEO OF YOUR BODY-nobody else is going to do it for us.
As a dentist, my mission has always been to try and prevent dental disease rather than treat it once it is there. In dental school, we had a lot of training in nutrition but we noticed that the medical students had ZERO training. If your diet can help to control decay and gum disease, why can’t it help to control other conditions? Now years later it is obvious that the mouth is the window to your health and it is blatantly obvious that your diet feeds or prevents many other medical conditions and diseases. About 5 or so years ago M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital did a research study and concluded that SUGAR FEEDS MANY TYPES of cancer. A patient of ours had breast cancer several years ago and they put her on a strict diet of no sugar and no alcohol. Today she is fine but still limits her sugar and alcohol intake.
Meanwhile, two weeks ago, I read a report from the BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL that now links 45 different diseases or medical conditions to SUGAR INTAKE! The big examples were: Cancer, Heart disease, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), Heart attack, Stroke, Type II diabetes, premature birth ADHD, and ex, but it also includes Decay and Gum disease. As most of you know, Sugar causes Decay and Gum disease. In fact, Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth and they are responsible for decay and gum disease. I wonder what happens to you from swallowing those bacteria and whatever infection is in your mouth? I am sure that it causes lots of problems!
In addition, I read the other day that SUGAR IS 8 TIMES MORE ADDICTIVE THAN COCAINE. I have a lot of patients that are extremely addicted to sugar. They have to have it every day! In 1950 the average American consumed about 2 pounds of sugar per year. In 2020 the Average American consumes about 200 pounds of sugar per year. That is close to a 4-pound bag of sugar per week! How can that be? It is because it is in almost everything is in a package, can, or bottle. What bothers me is that the manufacturers don’t always call it sugar. They call it dextrose, sucrose, maltose, fructose, corn syrup, etc. In fact, there are about 50 different names for sugar. I FOUND MORTON’S SALT AT THE GROCERY STORE WITH INGREDIENTS OF SALT, AND DEXTROSE! I called up Morton’s and complained but they said that they put it in there as a preservative and as an anticlumping agent. I wonder if they put it in there so that you would become addicted to their salt instead of another brand?? As a parent, I feel it is your obligation to raise healthy children and not get them addicted to Sugar at an early age.
Supposedly, SUGAR is in about 70-80% of anything packaged, so I want to encourage you to please read the labels and please try to avoid sugar. There are several tips I can offer to help with this epidemic!
- Throw out all of the SUGAR products you find at home.
- Don’t buy anything with SUGAR in it for home. If it is there you will eat it.
- Best you can, eliminate anything in a container since 70-80% of them have SUGAR in them. Buy Fresh fruits and vegetables and best you can make sure that your protein (Meat, fish, chicken, etc.) is NOT FARM RAISED. It needs to be Grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken, and wild-caught fish. All the other stuff is feed corn and unnatural things in addition to hormones and antibiotics.
- Read the labels. Anything that ends in an “OSE” is a sugar and if you don’t know the other items then don’t buy them.
- PLEASE DO NOT BUY ANY COLA or bottled fruit juices. Bottled orange juice usually has tons of Sugar. Also watch out for flavored waters, energy drinks, and Gatorade-type drinks.
- For snacks, I recommend healthy foods such as avocados, celery, carrots, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, Greek yogurt without sugar, nuts, and seeds. Many parents tell me that their kids will not eat that healthy stuff and that is because they have given them the sweet stuff instead. Trust me, if they are hungry, they will eat healthy. Please also avoid chips and crackers as they break down into sugar and they have tons of chemicals in them. Obviously, avoid candies.
- Avoid anything that is a “GUMMIE”. I find many kids are taking Gummie vitamins-lots of sugar.
- Be careful not to drink more than one carbonated drink per week as they are loaded with carbonic acid which will erode the teeth.
SUMMARY-It is obvious that your mouth is the window to your health. In my opinion, A GOOD DIET FOR ALL CHILDREN TRYS HARD TO ELIMINATE ALL FORMS OF SUGAR! FROM AN OVERALL HEALTH STANDPOINT I THINK IT IS GREAT TO ELIMINATE ALL PROCESSED FOODS AS THEY ALL HAVE SUGAR AND A LOT OF OTHER CHEMICALS AND PRESERVATIVES. WE ALL CHEAT SOME, SO MAKE SURE WHEN YOUR CHILDREN CHEAT THAT THEY GO BRUSH THEIR TEETH IMMEDIATELY.
“THE MOUTH IS THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH”. BRUSH AND FLOSS TWICE DAILY, AVOID SUGAR FOR 2023, AND SEE YOUR DENTIST AND PHYSICIAN REGULARLY.
